About Meringo Listen: Audiobooks

The best home on Android for the audiobooks you already own — your Libro.fm downloads, your own M4B and MP3 rips, and your Audiobookshelf server, together on one shelf.

Meringo Listen is the audiobook player for the listener who has already chosen to own their books. Point it at the files you own, or connect a self-hosted Audiobookshelf server. Bring your files, your server, or both.

WHAT IT DOESN'T DO

If you primarily listen to Audible, Meringo Listen is not for you. It does not decode Audible AAX files and it never will — that's a deliberate posture, not a roadmap item. It does not pull from Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive. It does not have a catalogue to discover books in. It does not have ads, a subscription tier, a recommendation engine, listening streaks, or engagement telemetry. There is no iOS version and there is no plan for one in the next twelve months.

If any of that is what you came for, the rest of this page is yours to skip. We'd rather you read this and bounce than download and refund.

WHAT IT DOES

Three things that set Meringo Listen apart in 2026.

A premium, paid, native Audiobookshelf client — built in Compose, no web-shell seams. Real two-way sync of position across devices, with last-write-wins position safety. Real offline downloads. Multi-library. Conflict-resolution UI when two devices have diverged. Bearer token held in the Android Keystore (AES-256-GCM); the app talks straight to your server, with no proxy in between.

A real voice EQ. Ten bands, 64-bit double-precision math, six curated presets tuned for spoken word — including a one-tap Subway preset that pairs an EQ shift with a downward compressor so the narration sits steady when your environment doesn't. Lock a preset to a narrator and the same curve loads next time you start one of their books.

Pitch-corrected speed that still sounds like English at 3×. Meringo Listen uses Media3's Sonic time-stretch (the Sonic algorithm, originally Bill Cox's) to vary tempo from 0.5× to 3× while holding pitch at 1.0, so voices stay natural and intelligible even at high speed. 1.0× is a clean passthrough.

ALSO IN THE BOX

Universal local file support (M4B, MP3 with ID3v2 CHAP chapters, FLAC, AAC, OGG/Opus, WAV). Bookmarks with notes. Smart rewind on resume. Sleep timer with fade-out and screen-dim envelope. Android Auto. Bluetooth headset chapter-skip on multi-press. Full diagnostics screen for listeners who want to see exactly what the audio path is doing.

NO TRACKING

Sentry crash reports are opt-in and off by default. There is no analytics SDK, no ad SDK, no engagement metrics, no "listened minutes" report sent anywhere. Audiobookshelf and (optional) Sentry are the only two outbound network endpoints. Server URLs are redacted before any Sentry payload leaves the device.

PRICING

$14.99, once. A 14-day free trial of the full app — no card required. Buy it and this version, with all of its updates, is yours; a future major version may one day be a separate, optional purchase, and if you never upgrade, the version you bought keeps working. Nothing you've unlocked is ever taken away. Restore-purchase if you reinstall or switch devices. No subscription. No premium tier.

WHO MAKES THIS

Made by Meringo Labs LLC, the same one-person shop as Meringo Music. If you already own one, the other plays well alongside it.

Meringo Listen is not affiliated with the Audiobookshelf project, Audible, FiiO, or any narrator, publisher, or trademark holder referenced in this listing. Audiobookshelf and the Audiobookshelf logo are trademarks of their respective owner; this app is a third-party client.
