About Word Chain Hanbang Dictionary
In Korean word chain (kkeunmal-itgi), a "hanbang" is a word whose last syllable starts no word in the dictionary.
Play one and your opponent has nothing to follow with: you win in one shot.
Hanbang Word Dictionary collects these words for each dictionary standard.
You can also practice playing them yourself.
■ When to use it
• Memorize hanbang words before a word-chain match
• Check whether the word you plan to play is a hanbang, and whether your opponent can still strike back
• Practice answering an opponent's word with a hanbang
• Compare how the two dictionaries differ
■ How you win
If your opponent plays 공부 (gongbu), answer with 부엌 (bueok).
No word in the dictionary starts with 엌, so your opponent cannot continue and the game ends in one move.
You can try exactly this kind of round in the Practice tab.
■ Two dictionaries
• About 1,400 hanbang words by the Standard Korean Dictionary
• About 800 hanbang words by Urimalsaem
Games use different dictionaries, so the dead ends differ too. Switch dictionaries with the buttons at the top and compare.
Initial-sound rules (dueum, e.g. 력→역) are checked, so only true dead ends are listed.
■ Words
• Search, and filter by 2, 3 or 4+ syllables
• Sort by common words first, by ending, or by length
• Hide loanwords (Standard) or dialect, North Korean and archaic words (Urimalsaem)
• Star words to save them
Tap a word to see why it is a hanbang and which words your opponent must play for you to use it.
■ Endings
All blocked endings at a glance. Tap an ending to see every hanbang word that ends with it.
Find endings like 녘 that give you dozens of hanbang words at once.
■ Check
Type a word to see whether it is a hanbang in both dictionaries,
and whether your opponent could strike back with a hanbang right away.
■ Practice
Answer your opponent's word with a hanbang that starts with its last syllable, in a chat-bubble format.
• Ten questions make one set; at the end you see your correct answers and best streak
• When you get it right, you also see the other hanbang words you could have played
• When you miss, you see why: wrong first syllable, a word can still follow, or not in the dictionary
• Stuck? Tap [Hint]: each tap reveals one more syllable
• Tap [Skip] to see the answer and move on
• Initial-sound rules (dueum) are accepted
• Switching dictionaries restarts practice with that dictionary
■ Tips
Learn easy hanbang words first, steer the opponent into the first syllable you need,
avoid dangerous endings, and watch the near-hanbang endings with only a few follow-ups.
■ Meanings
The app contains the word lists only. Tap [Look up] on a word to open it on the Standard Korean Dictionary or Urimalsaem website.
■ Light and simple
• No sign-up or login
• Lists and checks work offline
• Dark mode supported
• An ad may appear once in a while, only when a practice set ends
The words themselves are Korean (Hangul); the app menus are in your language.
