About Malfeld
Most multiplication apps drill facts into you. Malfeld shows you why they're true.
On the dot grid, your child sees what's behind "4 × 6": four rows of six that can be broken down into familiar core facts (×1, ×2, ×5, ×10), reversed (commutative property), and read backward (division). Calculating this way means understanding, not memorization—and retention.
HOW IT BEGINS
A short, playful assessment (no test, no grade) determines your child's current level of proficiency. You sit with them and tap on how they calculated. This establishes their starting point.
``` WHAT THE APP CAN DO
• Interactive dot grid: Swipe rows and tiles, build your own grid
• Decomposition: Set the dividing line and see how one difficult problem becomes two easy ones
• Exchange problem: Rotate and explain why the result remains the same
• Inverse problem: Read the same problem as a division problem
• Square problems and "One Picture, Four Problems" (multiplication, exchange, and division problems for one grid), as required by the curriculum
• Problems along the core number sequences (1, 2, 5, 10, then derivatives)
• Read-aloud button for children who are not yet fluent readers
OTHER TOPICS
Numbers up to 20 (Grade 1), numbers up to 100 with semi-written arithmetic (Grade 2), written arithmetic with a multiplication grid (3-4), divisors & prime numbers and negative numbers (5-6) – each topic with "Discover" (cards) and "Practice" (do it yourself, unlimited addition).
PLACE VALUE (GRADES 2–6)
• Grouping and ungrouping in the place value chart, up to one million
• Number line: reading, writing, ordering
• Rounding on the number line – which neighbor is closer?
• Estimating: “Is there enough money?” First estimate, then calculate
• Money and lengths with decimals: €3.45 = €3.45
• Decimals: why 0.3 is more than 0.25
FRACTS (GRADES 5–6)
• Parts of area, strips, and quantities; expanding and reducing fractions
• Comparing fractions, adding, subtracting, part of a part
• 3 pizzas for 4 children: fractions as division problems, mixed numbers
• From fraction to whole
• Fraction, decimal, and percentage on the hundreds chart
• Percentage strips as a preview of grade 7
All content is aligned with the North Rhine-Westphalia curriculum and current mathematics education standards.
``` FOR PARENTS
• Multiple children on one device, each with their own learning progress
• Learning progress without grades: "I can" statements and a multiplication table card showing what has been reviewed, derived, and mastered
• "Done for today" after a short session – no endless loop
• Transfer kit: Save learning progress as a file and transfer it to a new device
• Quiet mode, e.g., for dyscalculia (no therapy): less screen time, numbers in groups of five, more time with the material
• Family language: Number words, short instructions, and the parent section are also available in English, Turkish, Arabic, Ukrainian, or Russian
FOR SCHOOLS
Classroom mode with one task per child and a class overview without grades, unlocked via a pilot code from your school.
THE GUIDING PRINCIPLE
The app is always encouraging. There is no "wrong," only friendly, instructive feedback. Thinking is praised, not speed.
NO ACCOUNT, NO ADS, NO DATA COLLECTION
The app works completely offline and collects no data. Learning progress remains on the device. Internet access is only used for purchases via Google Play and their verification.
MALFELD PLUS
Free: the initial assessment, the tables 1, 2, 4, 5, and 10, square problems, and three cards and three practice exercises per topic. Malfeld Plus unlocks all tables and all cards – as a subscription (monthly or annual, 7-day free trial) or as a one-time purchase. Purchases are protected by an adult lock and apply to all children on the device.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Multiplication tables: Grades 2–3 according to the NRW 2021 curriculum; the other topics cover grades 1 to 6. Your child should already have some hands-on experience with quantities – Malfeld is a practice and strategy environment, not a beginner's tool.
