Ever deleted a selfie because the retouching was obvious?

Smoothing skin erases pores and texture along with the blemishes, and you end up looking like a doll. GlowMe works the other way around: instead of erasing texture, it puts it back.

■ Retouching that keeps your skin texture

The photo is split into a low frequency layer (color, shading) and a high frequency layer (pores, fine hair, texture). Only the low layer is smoothed, then the high layer is laid back on top. Skin gets even without disappearing.

The number at the top of the editor shows how much of the original texture survived. In the 90s means it still looks like skin, and if it drops the app warns you before you save.

■ Photos never leave the device

Uploading is not merely switched off — no code in this app sends a photo anywhere. Face detection, skin analysis, makeup and hair coloring all run on your phone. The server receives an anonymous install number and which days the app was opened, nothing else. No sign-up, no login, no cloud account.

■ 468 face points

Eyes, nose, lips, teeth, cheeks and hair are located separately, so lip color goes on lips only and whitening on teeth only. Nothing is smeared across the face.

Exposure, redness, backlight, noise and skin tone are read first, then only as much correction as the photo needs is applied.

6 tone filters, plus separate exposure, fill light, temperature and saturation controls.

Shape adjustments are capped relative to your face size. Push a slider to its limit and the result stays inside your own features. No face swap.

■ Gallery, backup and sharing

Saved photos stay on your phone, and deleting actually deletes. Settings and edit history export to a file and restore on a new phone. Share straight from the app or export to your gallery — saving writes a new file, so the original survives.

Photos saved or shared without a subscription carry a small logo in the bottom right corner. Hair coloring and full resolution saving unlock for 24 hours after one ad. Premium removes both the logo and the ads.

Q. Does it work offline?
A. Yes. Retouching and saving both work with no connection.

Q. Can I use it for a passport or ID photo?
A. Not recommended — official ID rules vary, and a retouched photo may be rejected.

Q. Can I edit someone else's photo?
A. Only photos you took, or ones you have permission to edit and post.

· Photos and media — only to pick a photo and save the result. The app does not scan or index your gallery.
· Camera — only when you shoot inside the app. Decline it and every feature still works with gallery photos.
· Advertising ID — used by the ad provider when an ad is shown.

Location, contacts and microphone are never requested.
