About Traverse: Word Chain

Two words. A gap between them. Get from one to the other.

Traverse gives you a start word and an end word - WINTER and SUMMER, say - and asks you to build a bridge between them. Every word you add has to be close in meaning to the word above it.

WINTER, SNOW, RAIN, SUN, SUMMER.

That is the whole game. It is harder, and quieter, than it sounds.

HOW IT WORKS

- A word is accepted only if it is one of the twelve nearest in meaning to the one before it.
- Par is the shortest crossing that exists between your two words. Match it and you have found the best route there is.
- You have to land on the end word exactly. Getting near it is not enough.
- Going over par still gets you across.

REJECTED IS NOT WRONG

Type a word that does not connect and you are told how close it came. "#19 nearest" means you had the right idea and need a smaller step. "Nowhere near" means try a different direction entirely. You are never left staring at a bare error message.

HINTS COST NOTHING

Being stuck is not the game. The hint button names a word that works from wherever you are standing - worked out from your actual position, not from a script, so it still helps when you have wandered somewhere the puzzle never expected.

TWO WAYS TO PLAY

- Daily: one bridge a day, the same one for everyone.
- Practice: endless bridges, with the difficulty set by par.

Every bridge ships with a checked solution. There are no unsolvable puzzles and no dead ends.

NO TIMER, NO LIMITS

No countdown. No cap on attempts. No streak you lose for being busy on a Tuesday. Sit with it, put it down, come back.

PLAYS OFFLINE

The whole game runs on your device. No account, no sign-in, nothing to create. Your stats are stored locally and are not sent anywhere. Only the ads need a connection.

Traverse is free, supported by ads. The banner stays out of the way at the bottom, and a full-screen ad only ever appears when you leave a puzzle you have already finished - never in the middle of one. This is a game made of concentration, and interrupting it would defeat the point.
