About Outlier: Odd One Out

Five words. Four of them belong together. One doesn't.

Tap the odd one out. That's the whole game, and a round takes seconds, so it fits in a lift ride, a queue, or the gap before your coffee lands.

EXACTLY ONE ANSWER, EVERY TIME

Most odd-one-out games fall apart the moment you can argue for a second answer. Outlier is built so you can't.

Every round is checked before it ships. The odd word shares no category at all with the other four. And no three of the four form a tighter group of their own, which is the subtler trap: three musical instruments plus a radio would leave two words looking odd instead of one. If a puzzle feels unfair, it isn't.

GET IT WRONG, SEE EXACTLY WHY

Tap the wrong word and the four that belonged together light up green, the answer you missed is marked in blue, and the category is named. You learn the rule instead of guessing at it.

IT GETS HARDER

Early rounds put a hammer among fruit. Later ones put an ant among mammals, a crab among fish, or a continent among countries. Difficulty isn't guessed at either: it's the distance between the two categories.

THREE WAYS TO PLAY

• Sprint — 60 seconds, as many as you can. A wrong tap costs three.
• Survival — three lives, no clock, endless.
• Daily — ten rounds, identical for every player, once a day.

A HAND-WRITTEN VOCABULARY

10,000 rounds drawn from 1,482 words across 99 categories: mammals and musical instruments, gemstones, currencies, planets, spices, sea creatures, tools, weather, body parts, continents.
