About Scales & Modes Explorer

Every scale and mode, on piano and guitar, with sound.

Scales & Modes Explorer is an interactive dictionary of 66 scales and modes. Pick a tonic and a scale and see it at once on a piano keyboard, on the fretboard of a guitar, bass, ukulele or mandolin, and on the staff. Hear it over a drone of the tonic, where the colour of a mode really comes out. Every feature is free.

SEE EVERY SCALE
• Formula in degrees (1 2 ♭3 4 5 6 ♭7) and in steps (W H W W W H W).
• Notes spelled correctly for every tonic: seven different letters, double sharps and flats where they belong (G♯ harmonic minor has F𝄪).
• The tonic in blue, the characteristic note in amber: the ♮6 of Dorian, the ♯4 of Lydian, the ♭2 of Phrygian.
• Character and typical uses of each scale, in a few words.

PIANO, FRETBOARD AND STAFF
• Two-octave keyboard with note names; tap any key to hear it.
• Fretboard for guitar (standard, drop D, DADGAD, open G and more), 4- and 5-string bass, ukulele and mandolin, left-handed too.
• Whole neck, box positions or three notes per string, with suggested fingers and a step through every position.
• Treble or bass clef, each note with its own accidental.

LISTEN THE RIGHT WAY
• Up, down or up and down, from 40 to 240 BPM.
• Alone, over a drone of the tonic or over its chord.
• Sampled grand piano, offline and sample-accurate.

THE MODES SIDE BY SIDE
• The seven modes of the major, melodic minor, harmonic minor and harmonic major scales.
• Parallel (same tonic: hear how one note changes the mood) or relative (same notes, another starting degree).
• Order them from brightest to darkest.

CHORDS OF THE SCALE
• Diatonic triads and seventh chords with roman numerals: Dm7 Em7 Fmaj7 G7…
• Tap a chord to hear it and see it on the instrument.

COMPARE AND FIND
• Compare two scales: notes in common and notes that differ, highlighted.
• Which scale has these notes? Tap the notes you hear and get every scale that contains them.

PRACTISE
• Which mode? Recognise the mode by ear over its drone.
• Complete the scale: choose the missing note, spelled correctly.

66 SCALES
