About Swipe & Say: Baby First Words
Swipe & Say is a bilingual picture book for babies and toddlers learning their first words. One picture, one word, and you name it together. Words come in eight languages, alone or two per card: handy for a bilingual family, or to bring in a second language early.
The eight languages are English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, and Russian. All of them are included, for every picture. You pick the main language, then a second one if you want.
Your child swipes through the flashcards and looks at each drawing while you say the word together. The app has no sound, so the voice your child hears is yours. There is no score and no timer. Your child goes at their own pace and can swipe back to a picture that caught their eye.
When your child knows a word, double-tap the picture. In the parents' settings, the "My child's vocabulary" screen shows how many words they know and a chart of their progress over time. You can then show only the words they don't know yet, or review the ones they already know.
The 45 starter pictures cover home, baby things, and animals. Twenty more packs are available as in-app purchases, with 15 pictures each (36 for letters and numbers): clothes, meals, vehicles, music, colors, the body, farm and zoo animals… The illustrations have a soft style, small imperfections included.
What you can adjust:
Writing in UPPERCASE, lowercase, or both.
Card order: in order, shuffled, or by category.
Which categories to show.
Light or dark theme.
As an option, "My photos" lets you add your own photos: the favorite teddy, grandma, the family cat. Take a picture or pick one from your gallery, then type the word in one or more languages. It is an in-app purchase.
Packs can be bought one at a time, or all together with "Unlock everything", which also includes "My photos". These are one-time purchases, with no subscription.
There are no ads and no account to create. The pictures, the eight languages, and your photos are stored on the phone, so Swipe & Say works offline. Only purchases go through Google Play.
To open settings, press and hold the top-right corner for 2.5 seconds. The store also asks you to solve an addition, which a toddler won't do by accident.
The app works in portrait and landscape, on phones and tablets. A backup file lets you move your settings, known words, and photos to another phone.
