WHAT A WIDTH-TIMES-SPEED CALCULATOR GETS WRONG
- Effective width is nominal width MINUS overlap. Every lapped pass is work done twice, and an 8% lap on a sprayer is 8% of your day.
- Field efficiency is not a book constant. Each headland turn costs roughly the same time whatever the field is, so the shorter the runs the more turns per hectare and the lower the efficiency. A drill in 200 m runs is a materially slower machine than the same drill in 800 m runs.
- Fixed cost is spread over a YEAR of work, not over this job. Depreciation and interest are paid whether the machine moves or not, so the same implement is cheap at 400 ha a year and ruinous at 40.
- The breakeven is derived, not guessed: annual fixed cost divided by what each hectare saves over the contractor rate. And when that rate is at or below your own running cost, owning never catches up at any area - the app says so rather than printing a large number.

IT REFUSES RATHER THAN GUESSES
Ask for a rate on an outfit that cannot physically go and you get the binding reason - too wide, too deep, soil too heavy, or simply too fast - along with the draft it needs, the drawbar power you have, and the fastest that tractor will pull it. A work rate for an impossible outfit is a number you would find out was wrong in the field.
Leave the fuel burn blank and the own-or-hire comparison is withheld instead of being decided on an invented figure.
