About The Relativist

The Relativist is a color perception instrument built on a single fact: the same color reads differently depending on what surrounds it.

Each session presents one target color and three context strips. The task is to tune three chips so they all read as the target — but the backgrounds shift the perception, and the eye has to compensate. The score measures how close each chip is to the target color itself, not what it appears to be.

A session is sixteen assignments, structured in four acts:

— Orientation: the grammar is introduced.
— Drift: the contexts begin to mislead.
— Interference: one assignment may permit a single reading, hold the target only briefly, or lock the strip order.
— Proof: the final four assignments resolve the session.

Mastery is tracked across five ranks — Vorkurs, Lehrling, Geselle, Jungmeister, Meister — based on rolling-window performance. The ranks are earned by consistency, not by total play time.

Nine studies, named for color theorists from the 19th and 20th centuries, change how the strips behave. Each study is introduced before its first session.

Part of the Bauhaus Suite — four standalone games, each its own instrument.

Every completed session resolves into an artifact — a designed record of the work, exportable as an image.

The game is fully offline. No accounts. No analytics. No ads. No in-app purchases. Nothing leaves the phone.
