About TotalPG
TotalPG is a PostgreSQL client for Mac and iPad that puts your data in front of you and keeps the ceremony out of the way. Open a connection and its tables, views, materialized views, sequences and functions are already there. Click a table and you are looking at its rows — filtered, ordered and paged by the server, so what you see is the whole table and not just the first hundred rows brought over. EVERYDAY WORK • Going through data. Pick a table and read it. The filter takes a condition in SQL and the server applies it to everything; the arrows walk the pages. • Changing it. Double-click a cell and write, or open the whole row. Rows are written by their key, including tables keyed by more than one column. What PostgreSQL works out for itself is shown and left alone. • Writing SQL. An editor that colours what you write and finishes the names of your own tables and columns, with several queries open at once, your saved templates, and what you ran before. • Understanding a database you did not design. The details panel says, in words, how a row is named, what it points at, who points back at it, what a new row has to bring and what fills itself in — plus its indexes, its triggers and how big it is. WHAT IT NOTICES FOR YOU • Look a database over and TotalPG lists what is worth your attention: a table whose rows cannot be named one by one, a foreign key the server has to read a whole table to follow, a time stored without its time zone, and the Total.js way of naming things. Every note carries the statement that settles it, ready to put in the editor. • Where an index would help reads the plan of your query without running it, names the tables PostgreSQL would read whole, and writes the CREATE INDEX that answers them. • Find a value looks for it across every table at once. Each hit says which table, which column and what is there — and opens that row, ready to change. • Who is in there now lists the sessions connected to your server, what they are running and who is waiting for whom. A session can be told to stop, or disconnected. BUILDING AND CHANGING • New tables, renames, columns added, changed or dropped — with the statements in sight before they run, applied all together or not at all. • Indexes seen, created and taken away. Functions opened in a tab, changed and put back in place. Views edited. Materialized views rebuilt. • What the server says while it works — a RAISE NOTICE from a function, a warning — is read next to the answer instead of being lost. • A table goes out to CSV, JSON or SQL whole, and comes back in from CSV. SIRI AND SHORTCUTS Three actions for the Shortcuts app, and through it for Siri: check whether a connection answers, run one of your saved queries and hear the answer, and look a database over. They hand their answer back as text, so you can chain them with anything else. What comes in this way only ever reads. PROTECTED CONNECTIONS A connection arrives protected: PostgreSQL runs it read-only, so it answers questions and keeps the database exactly as it is. Turn protection off for the time you want to write. It is the server that enforces it, not a list of words. REACHING YOUR SERVER • Direct, or through an SSH tunnel that TotalPG opens itself — with your password or your key, and the server's fingerprint remembered the first time. • TLS when your server offers it. • Connections move between your Mac and your iPad in a file you protect with a password of your own. MADE FOR TOTAL.JS The review knows the Total.js conventions — tbl_, cl_, log_, view_, id, dtcreated, is/has/can, dt — and the export writes your data out as SQL or as Total.js code ready to load. YOUR DATA STAYS YOURS Connections, history and templates live on your device. Passwords go to the Keychain. TotalPG talks to the servers you write down and to nobody else: no advertising, no tracking, no analytics.
What’s new
Version 2.0 · Updated October 27, 2026
TotalPG 2.0 is a new way of working with the same database. SEEING WHAT IS THERE • Materialized views, sequences, triggers and enumerated types are read now: they were in your database all along and the app could not see them. • A table says how big it is and roughly how many rows it holds, and a table split into partitions keeps its pieces in its own panel instead of filling the list. • The details panel tells you, in words, how a row is named, what it points at and who points back at it. WORKING FASTER • One click opens things: a connection reads its schema, a table shows its rows. • Several queries open at once (⌘T), and ⌘K takes you to any table by name. • The editor colours what you write and finishes the names of your tables and columns, aliases included. • Double-click a cell and write it, where you read it. KNOWING WHAT TO DO • Look a database over: tables without a key, foreign keys with no index under them, times without a time zone, and the Total.js naming — each one with the statement that settles it. • Where an index would help reads the plan of your query and names the indexes it is missing. • Find a value across every table; each hit opens the row it lives in. • Who is in there now: sessions, what they run, who waits for whom, and how to stop them. BUILDING • New tables, renames, indexes created and dropped, functions opened in a tab and put back in place, materialized views rebuilt. • A table goes out whole to CSV, JSON or SQL. • What the server says — a RAISE NOTICE, a warning — is read next to the answer instead of being lost. SIRI AND SHORTCUTS • Check a connection, run a saved query, look a database over. Read-only, always. FIXED • A changed key is saved instead of quietly dropped, and a row with a column PostgreSQL works out can be saved at all. • A table browsed and then queried by hand no longer keeps the filter and pages of the browser. • Foreign keys that cross schemas know what they point at. • A connection with a password now reaches a server set to trust. • The column editor runs exactly what it shows, in an order PostgreSQL accepts. • The file that carries your connections now costs real time to guess at. • What goes wrong is said in words, next to the query, in any language your Mac is set to.
