About Zone V

Zone V is a workshop, not a light meter. It exists to make the Zone System intelligible, the method formulated around 1940 by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer: how to decide, standing in front of the scene, what the print will show.

Three spaces, two passages. The scene has an immense range. The negative keeps part of it. The paper, the only one ever seen, shows less still. Exposure translates, development tilts: two measurements are enough to fix the transformation.

Touch the image to meter the light as you would with a spot meter. Give a zone to a shadow, another to a high value: the development follows from it. Set the paper grade, the selenium bath. Move from the scene to the negative, to the print, to the curve.

The photograph used as the scene is by Ansel Adams, View of Valley from Mountain, Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, 1941, Mural Project, public domain, National Archives 79-AAC-2.
