About Moon Pointer — Moon Finder AR
Point your phone at the sky and it tells you where the Moon or the Sun is — even when clouds, buildings or daylight hide it.
TWO WAYS TO FIND IT
• Compass — a dial that turns with you, with an arrow on your target. Turn until the arrow points straight up: the top of your phone is then pointing toward the Moon or the Sun.
• AR view — hold the phone up and the direction is drawn over the camera image.
Switch between Moon and Sun with one tap; the compass and AR view work the same way for both.
WHILE YOU TURN
The app tells you what to do in plain words: turn right 40°, then how high to point the top of the phone. When your target is below the horizon it says so, instead of pointing you at the ground.
SUN TIMES AND LIGHT
Never look directly at the Sun.
• Sunrise and sunset, each with its compass direction
• Solar noon and day length
• Nautical and astronomical twilight, morning and evening
• Golden hour and blue hour, morning and evening
• Pick any date for these times on the Sun page — today, tomorrow or a day you're planning for
• Today's path of the Sun across the sky, drawn on the compass dial and in AR
• Near the poles: a clear "Sun doesn't set" or "doesn't rise" message instead of a missing time
MOON INFORMATION
• The current phase, with a short description of what it means
• How much of the disc is lit, as a percentage
• Azimuth and altitude in degrees, for anyone who wants the numbers
• Moonrise and moonset times for today
• Distance from Earth, in kilometres or miles
• Where you are in the lunar cycle
CALCULATED, NOT DOWNLOADED
Sun and Moon positions are computed on your device from the date, time and your coordinates. No lookup, no server, no waiting. The app itself makes no network requests.
SETTINGS
Metric or imperial units, 12- or 24-hour times, and a theme that follows the system by default — light and dark are also available.
SAFETY
With the Sun selected, the compass and AR view remind you never to look directly at it, and so does the Sun page.
PRIVACY
• Location is used only to work out where the Moon and Sun are in your sky; the app never sends it anywhere
• The camera is only used while you have the AR tab open
• No ads, no analytics, no accounts
LANGUAGES
Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.
AR view needs a device that supports ARCore. Everything else works without it. Requires Android 8.0 or later.

What’s new
Version 1.0 · Updated September 24, 2026
- Without location permission, the header no longer says the Moon or Sun is visible; it now shows "Location needed", and the info bar in the camera view stays empty instead of showing guessed values - In the dark theme, the purple accent colour has been replaced with a softer moonlight tone
