The Low Income Housing Coalition of Alabama (LIHCA) is a membership organization that advocates increasing the availability and access to affordable housing. The mission of LIHCA is to increase housing opportunities for Alabamians with the greatest financial need, specifically those earning minimum wage or less. As the only statewide organization dedicated to increasing the number and quality of homes for Alabamians living in poverty, LIHCA strives to achieve its mission through three primary strategies: building the leadership capacity of people committed to improving housing options in communities for Alabamians with the greatest financial need, providing meaningful educational resources and opportunities, and serving as a leading housing advocate for low-wealth Alabamians.
Annually, LIHCA hosts the Southern Conference on Homelessness & Housing, its flagship regional event that draws homeless & affordable housing advocates, housing developers, state & local representatives, providers of public & mental health services, and people with lived experience from across multiple states...particularly throughout the Southeast United States. This conference not only addresses housing equity, racial equity, and aging; but serves as a call to action for activism, advocacy, and policy change to ensure that the voices of those affected by housing instability and homelessness are heard.
