About GainsTaxCalc: Capital Gains
Sold stocks, crypto, a home or something valuable? GainsTaxCalc estimates the U.S. federal tax on the gain and the money you keep after it, using the official figures for tax year 2026.
Key features
• Short-term or long-term from your purchase and sale dates, with the one-year-and-a-day rule explained and the date a sale turns long-term
• Stocks and funds, crypto, home sales and collectibles, each taxed the way the rules say
• Home sale exclusion of $250,000, or $500,000 on a joint return, with the ownership, use and two-year checks
• Long-term gains stacked on your other income across the 0%, 15% and 20% brackets, with collectibles capped at 28%
• The 3.8% net investment income tax, worked out from your estimated MAGI
• Several sales netted together: gains against losses, the $3,000 yearly loss limit ($1,500 if married filing separately) and carryover from earlier years
• Single, married filing jointly, married filing separately and head of household
• Estimated tax, effective rate and after-tax proceeds, plus the room left in the 0% and 15% brackets
• Typical examples, up to 20 saved scenarios and results you can share as text
How it works
Enter the sale price, cost basis and fees, pick the purchase and sale dates and your filing status, and add your other income as taxable income or as income before the standard deduction. The tax shown is the change in your federal income tax caused by the sales, so it reflects where your income already sits in the brackets. All amounts are in US dollars.
Estimates only, not tax advice. Federal tax for tax year 2026 only. State and local tax, wash-sale rules, alternative minimum tax, depreciation recapture, qualified small business stock, credits and other investment income are not included.
