About Tinnitus Tone Match: Frequency
Find your tinnitus frequency without hunting on a slider: you hear two sounds at a time and pick the one closer to your tinnitus. The app then measures loudness, checks consistency and makes notched noise from your result.
▶ PICK THE CLOSER SOUND, NO SLIDER
• Each step plays Sound 1 and Sound 2: choose the closer one or "About the same". The first round takes 8 to 12 choices.
• A left/right check comes first, so swapped earphones don't reverse per-ear results.
• Say where you hear it (left, right, both, inside the head, or different in each ear) and whether it rings, hisses or hums, with an example of each.
• Octave check: your match plays next to the same note an octave lower and higher, since these are easy to mix up.
• Fine-tune in 50 or 12.5 cent steps, or type a value in Hz. Range: 125 to 14,000 Hz.
▶ LOUDNESS AND CONSISTENCY, IN NUMBERS
• The app finds the quietest level where you hear the tone at your pitch, then you make it as loud as your tinnitus.
• Loudness reads "dB above the level where you started to hear it" (0 to 40 dB), relative to your own threshold with this phone and these earphones.
• Two shorter repeat rounds start from a different point. The result says how close the three rounds were: consistent (within 1 semitone), somewhat varied (within 3) or varied. Rounds about an octave apart are flagged.
• Result card: Hz, nearest note with cents, ear, sound type, loudness, consistency. Skipped repeats show "Matched once".
▶ SOUNDS MADE FROM YOUR RESULT
• Notched noise: a band removed around your pitch, ½ or 1 octave wide, fully removed or softened by 12 dB.
• Band noise: only a 1/3-octave band around your pitch.
• White, pink, brown or violet noise, a very quiet tone at your pitch, and rain, waves, fan or crickets generated on your phone (not recordings).
• Up to 3 layers, each with its own volume, and up to 12 saved mixes. Ears matched separately each get their own pitch.
• Left/right balance up to 6 dB, or both ears together.
• Loops are generated so the end joins the start without a gap.
• Sleep timer from 15 minutes to 12 hours, with a 30-second fade at the end. Night mode: black screen, big Stop button, time left.
▶ KEEPING THE VOLUME IN CHECK
• App volume limit 70% by default (50% to 85%), a fade-in at the start, and rises of at most 6 dB per second.
• Matching tones stop by themselves after 60 seconds.
• Sound stops when the earphones are disconnected or a call takes over.
▶ HISTORY AND SHARING
• Up to 6 profiles, for example one per ear. History keeps up to 200 results, with a chart of the last 10.
• Share a result as an image, for example to show your audiologist.
▶ GOOD TO KNOW
• This is a sound tool for describing what you hear. Results are approximate and depend on your phone, earphones and volume, so compare only with the same setup.
• Phones and earphones are not calibrated, so loudness is relative, not an absolute level.
• Above about 10,000 Hz many earphones play weakly; the app tells you when your match is that high.
• Use earphones in a quiet room.
• See a doctor or audiologist if your tinnitus starts suddenly, is in one ear only, pulses with your heartbeat, or comes with hearing loss, dizziness or ear pain.
• Results and mixes are stored only on this phone and left out of backups. The microphone is not used.
• Ads are muted and never appear during matching, on the result card, in night mode or while a sound plays. Banners show on the Match, History, Learn and Settings screens.
