About Shabd Yatra
Learn Hindi the way you would on a real trip: by walking the streets, talking to people and reading the signs.
Shabd Yatra (शब्द यात्रा, "word journey") is a cosy pixel-art adventure for English speakers who want to read, hear and speak Hindi. Step off the overnight train at New Delhi station and travel across Delhi NCR by Metro and Namo Bharat — all the way to Meerut, where Khari Boli, the root of Modern Hindi, was born.
A LANGUAGE COURSE HIDDEN INSIDE A GAME
• 44 step-by-step lessons in a little paathshala (school) in every neighbourhood
• The whole Devanagari script, taught slowly in small groups: vowels, every consonant row, vowel signs, joined letters, dotted letters and numerals
• Trace every letter with your finger
• About 270 everyday words and 55 sentences you actually hear in India
• Spaced-repetition review, so words come back just before you forget them
• Grammar notes in plain English: politeness, gender, postpositions, tenses, questions
A REAL JOURNEY THROUGH DELHI NCR
• 11 areas: Paharganj, Chandni Chowk, Connaught Place, India Gate, Nizamuddin, Mehrauli, Gurugram, Faridabad's Surajkund Mela, Noida, Ghaziabad and Meerut
• Walk into guest houses, havelis, spice shops, coffee houses, workshops and homes
• Meet chaiwalas, rickshaw-wallahs, poets, students, artisans and grandmothers — people speak more Hindi to you as you learn
• Win a Mohar (royal seal) from the Ustad of each area, then face the Shabd-Jinn who bottled up the city's words
• Side quests, hidden Jinn bottles, a kite-fighting mini-game and word-battles in the tall grass
HEAR EVERY WORD
• A built-in Hindi voice reads every word and sentence aloud — it works offline, even on phones without a Hindi voice installed
• Romanisation (namaste) can be switched on or off as your reading improves
MADE FOR CALM, STEADY PRACTICE
• Original music inspired by Indian classical and folk sounds: tanpura, bansuri, santoor, tabla — and a little filmi bazaar music
• No account, no ads, no tracking. Your progress stays on your phone.
Whether you are planning a trip, connecting with family, or simply curious about one of the world's most spoken languages, start your Hindi journey today.
