Marine Radar Lab

Marine Radar Lab puts a radar/ARPA console and a ship's bridge in your hand, so you can practise collision avoidance the way it is done on watch: plot, assess, act early, and check that your action works.

THE CONSOLE
• A full radar/ARPA picture with range scales, presentation modes, sea and ground stabilisation, off-centre, trails and true or relative vectors.
• Real rotary knobs for gain, sea and rain clutter, tune, EBL and VRM - two EBLs and two VRMs, one knob each.
• Target acquisition with CPA, TCPA, BCR and BCT, collision alarms and limits you set.

THE BRIDGE
• A steering wheel, autopilot with rate-of-turn control, engine telegraph, rudder angle and rate-of-turn indicators.
• Ships that handle like ships: a laden bulk carrier keeps swinging until you meet her, the engine takes time to answer, and it keeps out of its barred RPM range.
• Wind, current, shallow water and bank effect.

PRACTICE
• Short lessons that teach each control by using it.
• Scenarios from one crossing ship to a fishing fleet.
• Stand a watch, or sail a whole voyage pilot to pilot on a real route, pause it and resume it later.
• A debrief after every watch: your closest approaches, your actions and when you took them.
