About youdible: Deaf Live Captions
youdible is a live-caption app for deaf and hard-of-hearing people.
It turns nearby speech into captions in real time. So far, like other apps. The difference: the captions are not all the same.
When someone says your name, that one sentence turns red and large, the screen edge flashes, and your phone vibrates. On a bus, the driver shouting "Tap your card!" at you no longer looks like the chatter next to you.
HOW IT WORKS
- Tap Start; speech flows in as sentence-by-sentence captions
- Add your name and how it's often mis-heard (e.g. Rocky, Roki) in settings
- Three signals at once: the sentence turns red and large, the screen edge flashes, and the phone vibrates
- Captions render first, vibration follows — never "buzz but no words yet"
WHY
Existing caption apps compete on transcription accuracy. But a perfectly accurate gray wall is still hard to read. The problem was never "I didn't catch it" — it was "I don't know where to look." Apple and Google detect your name and show a notification; the caption itself never changes. youdible feeds detection back into the caption itself.
GOOD TO KNOW
- Needs internet (speech is processed on a server)
- Audio is never stored; it is discarded right after transcription
- Your name aliases stay on your device
- Currently in beta — real-world feedback welcome

What’s new
Version 1.1.0 · Updated August 31, 2026
Captions now grow with the voice — the louder a word is spoken, the bigger it appears. A shout fills the screen. Start listening from a home screen widget with one tap, without opening the app, and youdible keeps listening while you use other apps. Wearing a watch? Your name reaches your wrist too.
