About Lucid North — Lucid Dreaming
Lucid North is a self-experimentation tool for people who want to try lucid
dreaming — noticing, while you are dreaming, that you are dreaming.
It follows the targeted lucidity reactivation approach described in published
sleep research (Konkoly et al., 2024, Current Biology). The idea is simple. You
spend a few minutes before bed listening to a quiet tone while deliberately
asking yourself one question: am I dreaming? The tone comes to stand for that
question. Late in the night, the app plays the same tone again, very quietly,
while you sleep. If the association holds, the question follows the sound into
the dream.
HOW A NIGHT WORKS
1. Training. A short pre-sleep session. Every 45–90 seconds a soft tone plays
and the screen asks you to look around and genuinely consider whether this
could be a dream. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough.
2. Sleep session. Tap Start Sleep when you lie down. Nothing plays for the
first several hours — the early night is protected, because cueing during
deep sleep only costs you sleep quality.
3. Cue window. After your chosen delay (4h30 to 6h), cues run at a fixed
interval for 60 to 120 minutes. This is the stretch of the night where
dreaming sleep dominates. Cues fade in from near-silence so the onset never
jolts you awake.
4. Dream log. In the morning the app asks three questions — did you dream,
were you lucid, did you notice the cue — plus an optional description.
WHAT YOU CAN TUNE
• Delay before cueing: 4h30 / 5h / 5h30 / 6h
• Cue window length: 60 / 90 / 120 minutes
• Interval between cues: 10 / 15 / 20 minutes, or off
• Four cue tones: soft sine, chime, low hum, bell
• Volume: low or medium, with a slow or fast fade-in
• Training interval and length
EVERYTHING STAYS ON YOUR PHONE
There is no account, no sign-in and no server. Dream logs and settings are
stored locally on your device. The app makes no network calls and contains no
analytics and no advertising. If you want your data elsewhere, you export it
yourself as a CSV file and share it deliberately.
The app never records audio and never uses the microphone.
WHAT TO EXPECT
During a sleep session Lucid North shows a persistent notification and keeps a
media-playback foreground service running so it can play cues overnight. This
is visible the whole time and has a Stop button. Exempting the app from battery
optimisation is recommended, otherwise Android may end the session before the
cue window opens.
Cue timing is approximate, within about a minute, by design — the app does not
request exact-alarm permissions.
This version uses fixed-delay cueing. Sleep-stage refinement via Health Connect
is planned for a later release.
Most cues will pass unnoticed. Lucidity is not guaranteed on any given night,
by any method, and this app is a way to run the experiment on yourself, not a
promise of a result.
NOT A MEDICAL DEVICE
Lucid North is not a medical device and makes no health claims. It does not
diagnose, treat, cure or prevent anything. If you have concerns about your
sleep, talk to a doctor.
