About Homeschool Book Log

Little Oat Books is a reading log for the children in your home — homeschool or not — and a printable reading report for whoever asks to see one — a co-op, an umbrella school, a state filing, or next year's teacher.

Log a sitting, not a running total

Thirty minutes, forty-two pages, tonight. Every sitting records how the book was read — independently, read aloud, together, or as an audiobook — and takes a line of notes. Totals, streaks, and reports are all derived from those entries, which is what makes them worth handing to someone.

Or press Start reading when the child opens the book, and let the timer count the sitting for you.

Built around how children actually read

• Four shelves: In Progress, Want to Read, Completed, and Set Aside — because every reader abandons books, and deleting them is not a record.
• Series grouping, so "Magic Tree House #14" gathers with its siblings under one heading and a "9 of 28 read" count.
• Reading levels exactly as you write them — Lexile, AR, guided reading. Nothing is coerced into a number.
• Grade stamping: each book keeps the grade its student was in when it was added, so a year's reading stays attached to its year.
• A profile for every child, each with their own log, goals, and report.

The report

A printable PDF in five colour schemes, covering a term, a year, or all time. Choose the sections and details it carries, put your school's banner, logo, and name across the top, then print it or share it. Turn on the session log and it prints the individual evenings behind every total — which is what turns a report from a claim into a record.

A family report covers every student in one document, each on their own page, so it can be split up and handed to different people.

CSV exports cover books, sessions, and per-student totals, for anyone who would rather have a spreadsheet.

Finding books

Point the camera at the barcode on the back of a book and the title, author, ISBN, page count, and cover fill themselves in. Or search by title or author. Nothing is photographed or saved — only the digits go out.

Trends, goals, and streaks

Weekly or monthly minutes and pages, genre mix, how books were read, Lexile growth, and series progress. Set a daily minutes target and a days-per-week target, then watch the streak build — for one child or for the whole household. An optional nightly reminder arrives on the evenings you choose, at the time you choose.

Everything stays on your phone

No account, no sign-in, no server. Your children's names, photographs, and reading history never leave the device — the only thing that goes out is the text of a book search. Back the whole log up to a file you keep yourself, and restore it whenever you need to.

What is free, and what Plus adds

Reading your log, correcting it, logging reading against books already on your shelves, every CSV export, and full backup and restore are free forever. A subscription that lapses never hides, locks, or deletes a single thing you have already recorded.

Little Oat Books Plus adds books and students, reading reports, family reports, trends, goals, reminders, barcode scanning, the reading timer, saved report layouts, and your school's branding on every page. Monthly or yearly, each starting with a 14-day free trial run by the store.

Little Oat Books is made for adults — a parent, guardian, or educator keeping a record of a child's reading. It is not designed for children to use.

Book data and covers from Open Library, a free project of the Internet Archive.
