Carbon Tracker: Eco Food Scan

Make every grocery trip a climate-smart choice. Point your camera at a food barcode and Carbon Tracker shows an estimate of the product's carbon footprint (g CO₂e), its Green-Score (formerly Eco-Score), and lower-carbon alternatives from the same aisle.

Food production accounts for roughly a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet packaging rarely shows it. Carbon Tracker turns published life-cycle data into a clear answer in seconds.

📸 FAST BARCODE SCANNER
- Scans EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC, and GS1 retail barcodes
- Works offline with a built-in supermarket database
- Looks up millions more products through Open Food Facts when you're online

🏷 GREEN-SCORE (FORMERLY ECO-SCORE)
- See an environmental grade at a glance, from best to worst
- Understand why a product scores high or low

🔬 LIFE-CYCLE BREAKDOWN
- Ingredients: farm-stage emissions and resource use
- Processing and energy: factory carbon intensity
- Packaging: recyclability and materials (rPET, cardboard, glass, aluminium)
- Food miles: origin, distance, and transport method

🔄 GREENER SWAPS
When you scan a high-carbon item, the app suggests lower-emission alternatives in the same category. In some cases the difference is very large.

⚠ DEFORESTATION RISK ALERTS
Spot ingredients linked to deforestation risk, such as uncertified palm oil, soy feed, and cattle.

📊 YOUR CLIMATE DASHBOARD
- Track your monthly scanned emissions (kg CO₂e)
- See your grade distribution chart
- Export your scan history to CSV

ABOUT THE NUMBERS
Results are estimates based on published life-cycle assessment data (ADEME Agribalyse and Poore & Nemecek, Oxford) and the open Open Food Facts database. They show typical impacts for a product category and are not audits of an individual product.
