About Quiz for NFL - Football Trivia
December 31, 1967. Lambeau Field, Green Bay. About 13 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. Moments into the NFL Championship Game, the referee blew his metal whistle - and it froze to his lips. For the rest of the afternoon the officials ran the game by shouting. Up in the broadcast booth, the coffee froze in the mugs.
Football is full of things like this. The yellow first-down line you see on TV is not painted anywhere on the field. In a three-hour broadcast, the ball is actually in play for only about 11 minutes. And the name "Super Bowl" came from a bouncy toy ball that an owner's kids were playing with.
This app turns stories like those into three-choice questions. The only ones that made the cut are the ones that make you say it out loud the moment the answer lands.
A drive fits in a coffee break
Five questions to a drive, about thirty seconds each. No background required. Every right answer moves you down the field; get all five and it's a touchdown. On the train or in the last few minutes before bed, you always stop at a clean break.
The answer is not the end of it
Every question comes with an explanation, and the explanation has its own twist. The frozen whistle, the yellow line - the best part of each story arrives after you answer.
New to football or a lifelong fan
Three levels: Rookie, Pro Bowl and Hall of Fame. Football terms come with a quick note, so you can follow along even if you have never watched a game. If you already know the sport, start at Hall of Fame.
Odd moments, records, rules, people and fans
The black cat that ran across the field in the middle of a nationally televised game. The college center who turned down the NFL and later became President of the United States. The team owned by about 540,000 of its fans. Why a game played mostly with the hands is called football. Topics are deliberately spread out, so no single theme takes over.
Now you know why
The huddle is credited to a university for deaf students, where the quarterback gathered his teammates in a circle so opponents could not read his sign language. Football is called the gridiron because early fields were marked in a grid, like a grill for cooking meat. Things you see every Sunday turn out to have a reason.
No connection needed
Every question lives inside the app. Subway, airplane, basement: open it and play without checking for a signal.
Read it in another language
English, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, French and German. The same question can land differently in another language.
Sourced and checked
Everything here really happened. The questions draw on the Pro Football Hall of Fame, NFL records, the official rulebook and reporting from the time. Where a story is disputed, the explanation says so. Nothing unverified is ever the right answer.
Made for you if
- You watch the Super Bowl but rarely hear the stories behind it
- You have always wondered how the rules of football work
- You like collecting stories worth retelling
- You want something you can pick up and put down at any time
Stadiums have been collecting stories for more than a century, and plenty of them still have not been told. By the first question, you will probably want to tell someone.
This is an unofficial quiz app made by an independent developer. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NFL or any of its teams. Team and player names are used only to describe facts.
