About تفسير ابن كثير
The Great Qur’an Interpretation by Ibn Kathir is considered one of the famous interpretations known to everyone. Imam Al-Suyuti said: “Nothing like it has been written in its style.” This is due to the soundness of the methodology that Ibn Kathir followed in his interpretation, which is interpretation based on transmitted reports. He explained this in the introduction to the interpretation by saying: “If someone says, ‘What is the best interpretation?’” The answer is that the soundest method is to interpret the Quran with the Quran itself. What is stated concisely in one place may be elaborated upon in another. If this proves difficult, then turn to the Sunnah, for it explains and clarifies the Quran. If we find no explanation in the Quran or the Sunnah, then we refer to the statements of the Companions, for they were more knowledgeable due to the contextual clues and circumstances they witnessed, and because of their complete understanding, sound knowledge, and righteous deeds. He then said: If you do not find the explanation in the Quran, the Sunnah, or among the Companions, then many scholars have referred to the statements of the Successors (Tabi'in), such as Mujahid ibn Jabr, who was a master of Quranic exegesis, and Sa'id ibn Jubayr, 'Ikrimah, the freed slave of Ibn 'Abbas, 'Ata' ibn Abi Rabah, al-Hasan al-Basri, Masruq ibn al-Ajda', and Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib.
This method is considered the best approach to interpreting the Holy Quran. Scholars and Muslims have devoted great attention to this interpretation; some have verified, corrected, and commented upon it, while others have abridged it.
