About SkyLumi: AI Star Map & Guide

SkyLumi is a free star map and stargazing guide that shows you the real night sky, not a cartoon of it. Point your phone or tablet up and identify what you're seeing: a planetarium built from real observatory photography, free, with no ads and no account.

★ A REAL PLANETARIUM, POINTED AT YOUR SKY

Most star map apps draw flat diagrams. SkyLumi renders the night sky photographically, from genuine observatory surveys: accurate star colors, true brightness, the Milky Way as it actually appears from where you stand. Zoom into the Orion Nebula or the Andromeda Galaxy and you're looking at real astronomical photography, credited in-app to the observatories that captured it.

★ POINT YOUR DEVICE, IDENTIFY WHAT YOU SEE

Tap Aim and hold your device up to the sky. Real motion sensors, and the compass on devices that have one, track where you are pointing. That bright dot over the rooftops? Point at it and find out. SkyLumi helps you identify every planet, bright star and all 88 constellations, plus galaxies, nebulae and star clusters. It also shows the International Space Station and Starlink satellites passing overhead, computed live from real orbital data. Open AR and the star map is drawn over your camera view, lined up with the real sky.

★ BUILT FOR BEGINNERS

SkyLumi is stargazing for the moment you look up and wonder:

• "What's that bright star next to the moon?"
• "Is that a planet or a plane?"
• "Which one of those lights is the ISS?"
• "Where is the Andromeda Galaxy right now?"

No astronomy background needed. Every beginner question gets a plain answer: you point, you see, you know.

★ COMPLETELY FREE

SkyLumi is free. Not free-with-ads, not a seven-day trial. No account, nothing locked, no ads anywhere. Every feature on this page is included.

★ ALSO INCLUDED

• Lumi Star Guide: a short, plain-language shortlist of what's worth looking for after dark tonight from where you are, each with a story about what you'll be seeing
• Night vision mode: a deep red display that protects your dark adaptation
• Horizon view: the night sky over your actual horizon, from your location
• Search: jump to any planet, star, constellation, or deep-sky object
• The Moon with its real phase, and every naked-eye planet along the ecliptic
• Works offline: the bundled sky, plus an optional larger sky photo pack on Wi-Fi. Sharp photos need the pack or a connection.
• Real observatory imagery with full credits to the surveys behind it

★ ENHANCED DEEP-SKY PHOTOS

In most sky photos the brightest part of a nebula or galaxy comes out as a plain white blur, because the picture is overexposed right where the interesting detail is. SkyLumi fixes that for more than two dozen of the best-loved objects, including the Lagoon, the Dumbbell, the Helix, the Crab, the Whirlpool and the Sombrero. Each one uses a real observatory photograph of that same object, adapted with AI. The colours and shapes you see come from a real photo rather than from imagination. Every photograph used is credited by name inside the app.

SkyLumi has no chatbot and no voice assistant.

★ QUESTIONS

Does it work in a city?
Yes. Bright stars, the Moon, and ISS passes are all visible from a city, and SkyLumi shows you where to look for each of them.

Do I need any equipment?
No. SkyLumi is built for the naked eye first. The photographic zoom shows you far more than your eye can see: the sky's own photography, brought to your screen.

Is it good for a beginner?
Yes. SkyLumi is a stargazing guide designed for beginners first: plain language, no jargon, and a planetarium view that matches what's actually over your head.

Does it work offline?
Stars, constellations, planets and a low-resolution whole sky come with the app. On idle Wi-Fi it can also save a basic 33 MB offline sky; switch it off in settings. A larger photo pack is optional. Until then, sharp photos and satellites need a connection.

Is it really free?
Yes. Nothing is locked, there are no ads, and there is no subscription.

What’s new

Version 1.1.1 · Updated October 10, 2026

Panning and zooming are smoother, especially on phones with fast 120 Hz screens. The view holds steady when you zoom in close on a galaxy or nebula. Offline downloads now live in their own section in Settings, and the download tells you when it is waiting for Wi-Fi or a connection. A Bluetooth touchpad can zoom the sky with a scroll.

There are many star map apps out there but this one really stood out. I love the ability to aim at a galaxy to zoom in to its high fidelity picture. It opens up a whole new dimension to star gazing.
