Hootle Chess for Kids

Hootle Chess teaches children to play chess, from the very first move to real chess tricks, and then gives them robots to beat.

CHESS SCHOOL
Ten chapters, 90 short lessons and more than 250 puzzles and games, taught by Hootle the owl and the robots of the ladder. Each lesson shows one idea on a real board, lets the child try it, and reads every line aloud. Every chapter ends with practice: checkmates to find, forks and skewers to spot, races to win.
1. The board and the pieces
2. Capturing and defending
3. Check and checkmate
4. Special moves: castling, promotion, en passant and draws
5. Starting the game
6. Tactics: forks, pins, skewers, double check and trapped pieces
7. Checkmate patterns: back rank, smothered mate, the queen's kiss, mate in two
8. Endgames: pawn races, passed pawns, the rook that cuts the king off
9. Making a plan
10. Grand review
Chapters open one after another, so a child always knows what to learn next. The grand review ends with real games: beat the three easiest robots, from the very first move, to graduate.

TEN ROBOTS TO BEAT
Climb a ladder of ten robot players, from Baby Chick, who is just learning, through Clever Fox, Professor Owl and Fire Dragon, up to Mega Brain. Every robot plays a little stronger than the one before, so each win feels earned.
