Catena Aurea (The Golden Chain of St. Thomas Aquinas)
St. Thomas Aquinas' Catena Aurea or "golden chain" is an anthology of Patristic commentary on the Gospels, including quotes from over fifty Church Fathers. Catena Aurea is structured by presenting each verse to be analyzed followed by commentary from the Church Fathers.
During the 13th century when this work was compiled there was a great interest in going back to the original interpretation and many of the works of the Eastern Fathers were translated then from Greek to Latin.
St. Thomas Aquinas was appointed the task to write the Catena Aurea by Pope Urban IV, so that a commentary on the Gospels be available to everyone. John Henry Newman translated the work into English in 1841.
