If you don't know how to read a character, you can't type it. The application offers many access options:

Note: Calligraphy images are retrieved from the content server each time you view them, so an internet connection is still required even after offline data downloads.

Handwriting recognition and text in images are processed entirely on the device — the handwriting you write and the photos you take are not sent anywhere.
