The first ice hockey game under Creighton rules was played in Montreal, Canada, in 1875. The inaugural ice hockey game in Canada was played at the Victoria Skating Rink in the same year, where new rules were introduced. Some features of this game, such as the ice rink's length and the use of a disc, are still used today. However, other rules were modified from English rules to suit ice hockey's unique logistical requirements, as it is played on a closed ice rink rather than an open field.

Professional ice hockey as we know it today began to develop around 1904, with the creation of the International Professional Hockey League based in Houghton, Michigan, and its inaugural team, the Portage Lakers. The first competitive ice hockey game featuring three teams was played in the Winter Carnival of Montreal in 1883.

Organized leagues formed in Canada in the mid-19th century, and ice hockey rules continued to evolve, including the size of the net and the number of players on the ice at one time (six for each team, with a goaltender). The first organized indoor ice hockey game was played in the Victoria Skating Rink between two teams of nine players, including James Creighton, a Canadian, and several other students from McGill University.
