About ZenNotes: Markdown Notes

ZenNotes is a markdown notes app for people who want to own their notes. A vault is just a folder of plain .md files: readable in any editor, portable forever, and never locked inside an app.

YOUR VAULT, YOUR STORAGE
• Keep notes in the app's private storage — zero setup, no permissions, fully offline.
• Or open any folder on your device as the vault through the system folder picker.
• Pair that folder with Syncthing, FolderSync, or any sync tool and the same vault opens in ZenNotes desktop on your computer. No account, no sync service, no server.
• Everything stays plain markdown on disk. Leave anytime and your notes come with you.

WRITE AND READ RICH MARKDOWN
• Live preview: KaTeX math, Mermaid diagrams, interactive JSXGraph geometry, function plots, tables, callouts, footnotes, highlights.
• Wikilinks and #tags connect your notes; backlinks and connections show what points where.
• The same rendering engine as ZenNotes desktop — your notes look identical everywhere.

CAPTURE FAST
• Quick Notes: one tap and type.
• Share from any app: send text or a link to ZenNotes and it lands in your vault.
• Daily, weekly, and monthly notes with configurable patterns and templates.

ORGANIZE WITHOUT CEREMONY
• A vault-wide Tasks view: list, week or month calendar, and a kanban board with custom statuses, parsed from ordinary "- [ ]" checkboxes in your notes.
• Long-press any task for the full menu: mark in progress, due dates, priorities.
• Table databases stored as CSV: add rows and fields right on the phone.
• Tags view, Archive, and a recoverable Trash.

MADE FOR THE PHONE
• A minimal home screen, a floating button that fans out New / Search / Browse / More, full-screen search and commands, and a slide-in vault drawer.
• An editing toolbar docked to the keyboard: headings, bold, checkboxes, lists, links, wikilinks, tags, indent.
• On tablets, the layout grows toward the desktop app: persistent sidebar, tabs, and panels.

CONNECT TO YOUR OWN SERVER (OPTIONAL)
• Self-host the open-source ZenNotes server and connect the app to it as a remote workspace — your notes live on hardware you control.

PRIVATE BY CONSTRUCTION
• No account. No analytics. No tracking. No ads.
• No scary permissions: ZenNotes never requests "All files access" — the folder tier uses Android's scoped folder picker, and the default tier needs no permission at all.
• The data safety form reads "No data collected" because nothing ever leaves your device except through storage and servers you choose.

ZenNotes for Android is the mobile companion to ZenNotes desktop (free and open on GitHub). Same files, same renderer, same philosophy: keyboard-first on the desk, local-first everywhere.

What’s new

Version 1.1.27 · Updated September 25, 2026

The shared 2.56.1 core: a vault can carry a name of its own. • Rename Vault… (All commands… in the ••• sheet) names a vault for the drawer and the vault switcher; the folder keeps its name • A Markdown table converts into a database, linked from the note • Settings search reaches every setting, and finds where new tasks go • A task added from the calendar panel joins the note's Tasks section • A task's code block stays under its text in Preview • Help reads as one page No new permissions.

already amazing, quite a few things wrong with it though. can't wait for it to have a more robust UI and for it to feel more like a mobile app with better gestures, less bugs, more settings, etc., I'm super happy.

the fact that it is so easy to self host from my pc is so neat and made me switch from obsidian, adding to that the typographic ui is a gem, love the dev

I've been using ZenNotes for a while now and my overall experience has been great. It's one of the few note-taking apps that genuinely feels like it was made with users in mind. The app is actively developed, bugs get fixed, and user feedback is actually listened to. Seeing new features and improvements being added ...
