A man had seven strong sons but he longed to have a daughter. Eventually, his wife gave birth to a baby girl.
The man was overjoyed, but the child was sickly and small and looked like it might not survive. The father sent his sons to fetch water for her baptism.
When the sons arrived at the well, each of them wanted to be first to fill the jug. As they fought, the jug fell into the well. None of them dared to go home after this.
Because of this delay, the father became afraid that the little girl might die before being baptized, and in his anger cried, “I wish those boys were all turned into ravens.
He then looked up into the sky and saw seven coal-black ravens flying away into the distance. There was nothing he could do now to undo the curse.
Meanwhile, the little girl grew up to be beautiful and strong and became determined to find her brothers. She took a ring belonging to her parents and set off in search of them.
She traveled far and wide, continually searching, until she came to the very end of the world. So she continued towards the sun but it was much too hot.
Hastily, she turned away from the sun and ran towards the moon, but the moon was far too cold.
She turned swiftly away again and came to the stars which were kind and good to her. They gave her a chicken drumstick and said, “Without that drumstick you cannot open the Glass Mountain, and in the Glass Mountain are your brothers.”
When she arrived at the Glass Mountain, she found a door but it was shut and she had lost the present that the good stars had given her. She put her little finger in the keyhole and managed to open the door.
When she got inside, she found seven plates of food and seven glasses of water on the table. The little sister ate a morsel of food from each plate and took a sip of water from each glass. As she was doing so, she dropped the ring belonging to her parents in the last glass.
When the ravens returned, they sat down to eat. “Look at this!” the seventh raven picked up the ring in his glass and recognized it immediately. “I wish our sister was here. If she touched us we would be free.”
The girl came out from where she had been hiding. She touched them all, lovingly, and immediately they were all restored to their human forms again.
