Engawa Japanese Watch Face

🪵 THE VIEW FROM THE ENGAWA
The engawa is the wooden walkway that runs along the outside of a Japanese room — the threshold between inside and garden, and the whole dial is that one view. Shoji lattice and washi paper on the left, a cedar plank down the middle, and a raked black stone garden with bronze bamboo at four and five o'clock. In the centre, a washi disc holds a range of distant mountains in sumi ink.

🕰 ANALOG OR DIGITAL
The face ships as a three-hand analog: steel hour and minute hands and a thin gold sweep second. One setting swaps the hands for a large digital h:mm in the middle of the dial. Everything else stays exactly where it is.

🔢 FOUR COMPLICATIONS
The day and date sit above the centre. Below it, three more — steps, heart rate and battery to start with, and each of the three can be changed to whatever you prefer: weather, calendar, timer and the rest. Nothing is painted into the dial for them, so an unassigned one leaves plain washi.

📏 THREE COMPLICATION SIZES
Large, Medium or Small.

🕰 THREE HAND COLOURS
Shirogane (steel), Kurogane (blackened) and Shu (vermilion lacquer). The gold sweep second stays gold in all three — it is the one warm accent on the dial.

🖌 THREE INKS
Sumi (ink), Ai (indigo) and Shu (vermilion). The ink colours every value drawn on the dial: all four complications and the digital time.

⚫ ALWAYS-ON DISPLAY
A black ground with twelve pale hour bars and the hands in white — 2.3% of the dial lit. Burn-in safe and easy on the battery.

Long-press the watch face on your watch to change the complications, their size and ink, the hand colour, and the analog or digital time.
