About Kakeibo

Kakeibo (pronounced ka-kei-bo) is a Japanese savings management method that literally translates to "household financial ledger." Invented in 1904 by journalist Hani Motoko, it is much more than a simple spreadsheet: it is an exercise in mindfulness applied to your wallet.

Unlike modern apps that automate everything, Kakeibo relies on handwriting, which helps you better process and internalize your spending habits.

The heart of the system consists of asking yourself four fundamental questions at the beginning of each month:

- How much money do you have available? (Fixed income)
- How much would you like to save? (Monthly goal)
- How much are you actually spending? (Real expenses)
- How can you improve? (Final reflection)

To monitor where your money goes, Kakeibo suggests dividing expenses into four "pillars":

1 - Needs (Survival): Essential expenses such as rent, bills, food, and medicine.
2 - Wants (Optional): Leisure activities, restaurants, and non-essential shopping.
3 - Culture: Books, cinema, museums, and concerts.
4 - Extras (Unexpected): Birthday gifts, sudden repairs, and fines.
