Steelworks Tycoon: Make Steel

You've been asked to save a struggling steelworks. The director hands you an old plant that has lost money for years. Melt iron in the blast furnace, pour the hot metal into ladles, haul them by locomotive to the converter and turn it into steel. Make steel that meets each order, earn money, invest in your plant and aim for the world's largest steelworks — a sandbox management sim of real steelmaking. ■ Draw the track with your finger Lay the rails that carry ladles from furnace to converter. How you lay the track and how many ladles you run decide how much iron you can move. Too many ladles clog the track and cost upkeep. ■ Pick orders and meet the spec Construction steel, heavy plate, hot-rolled coil, tinplate for cans, automotive sheet and electrical steel. Every order has limits for phosphorus, sulfur and carbon. Invest in pretreatment, secondary refining and rolling lines to make more kinds of steel. ■ Grow your steelworks Light a second blast furnace, add converters and casters, and reclaim land from the sea. Your ironmaking and steelmaking departments level up as you produce, unlocking new upgrades. ■ Four starting layouts A seaside plant, an inlet site, a patchwork old plant and a new reclaimed site. Distances between facilities change your costs, so layout is part of the strategy. ■ Eras and trouble Cheap imports, the premium steel era, then decarbonization: electric arc furnaces, a carbon tax and green belts to cut CO₂.
