About Cosmoscape

See Earth, the Moon, and the Solar System in real-time 3D, placed where real astronomy puts them. The Sun, the Moon, and the planets follow JPL's DE441 planetary ephemeris, and the sky over your city is calculated for your exact place, date, and time. Watch day and night sweep across the globe, find tonight's Moon above your city, follow its phases and libration, or travel through the Solar System anywhere from the year 1026 to 3026. EARTH - A detailed 3D globe with NASA Blue Marble imagery and terrain relief - Daylight and night move across the planet, with city lights on the night side - See Earth, the Moon, and the Sun together and move through time MOON WATCHING - Choose a city and see where the Moon and Sun are in its sky, calculated for that place, date, and time - The sky dome shows the planets from Mercury to Neptune, about 8,900 stars mainly from the Hipparcos catalog, constellation lines, and bright deep-sky objects - A natural sky from a physical sky model: daylight, twilight, and night colors, moonlight that brightens the sky, and stars that come out as it gets dark. The Sun and the Moon set behind the mountains on the horizon - Look at the dome from outside to understand the geometry of the sky, or step inside for a fisheye view from the ground - Sky Compass: in the fisheye view, point your iPhone or iPad at the sky to see that part of it - In the fisheye view, tap any object to follow it, or search by name or Bayer/Flamsteed designation. A marker stays on it even below the horizon - Follow any constellation as it rises and sets above your city, projected onto the sky dome like a planetarium, with IAU or Modern constellation figures. 495 stars carry their current IAU names SKY INFO - For what you follow: altitude with and without refraction, azimuth, right ascension and declination (of date and J2000), distance, light time, magnitude, and constellation - Visibility: the altitude from noon to noon on one graph, with rise, transit, and set times and twilight shading MOON CALENDAR - Phase, age, and illumination for any date, with moonrise, moonset, sunrise, and sunset - A 3D Moon whose orientation and libration change from day to day, with craters lit by the Sun - Jump to Moon Watching to see that night's sky SOLAR SYSTEM - Planets and the Moon move along positions from the DE441 ephemeris, not circular animations - Planet orbits, a Moon orbit that follows its real distance and tilt, and adjustable planet size - Saturn's rings tilted and lit as on the real planet for any date - Speed time up from 1 minute to 30 days per second, run it backward, or stop and look around - Tap a planet to see its information card - Planet View: the camera slowly circles one planet, then moves on to the next one you chose TOURS Let Cosmoscape fly you around Earth, the Moon, and the planets. FREE AND COSMOSCAPE FULL Cosmoscape is free to download, and every mode is included. Cosmoscape Full is a one-time In-App Purchase, not a subscription. The free version: - View any date and time - Play time forward or backward within 24 hours of now (Earth, Moon Watching) or within one year (Solar System) - Search the sky, tap to follow, and use Sky Compass - Sky Info and Visibility for the Moon and the Sun - Tours and Planet View: 15 seconds each in each session - Up to 60 fps Cosmoscape Full adds: - Time playback without limits - Sky Info and Visibility for the planets and the named stars - Unlimited tours and Planet View - Favorites in the sky search - Planet details: next opposition, conjunctions, greatest elongations, retrograde periods, perihelion and aphelion - Complete Moon Calendar details: distance, angular size, altitude and azimuth, libration values, and the sub-solar point - Up to 120 fps on ProMotion displays No account, no ads, no tracking. Cosmoscape is an independent app and is not affiliated with or endorsed by NASA or JPL. It is made for learning and enjoyment, not for navigation or other safety-critical use.

What’s new

Version 1.4 · Updated November 2, 2026

NEW: SKY INFO • Open Sky Info from the target tag in Moon Watching: altitude (with and without atmospheric refraction), azimuth, right ascension and declination (of date and J2000), distance, light time, magnitude and constellation for the Moon, the Sun, the planets and 495 named stars. • Visibility: the object's altitude from noon to noon, with rise, transit and set times and twilight shading. • Sky Info for the Moon and the Sun is free. Planets and stars are part of Cosmoscape Full. FISHEYE DOME • Sky Compass: tap the compass and point your iPhone or iPad at the sky to see that part of the sky. • Tap a star, a planet, the Moon, the Sun or a deep-sky object to track it. With Constellations on, tap a constellation name to track the constellation. • Objects you tap are added to Recent in the sky search. MORE ACCURATE SKY • Planet positions in the domes, the Earth view and the sky search now come from JPL's DE441 ephemeris. Uranus and Neptune now appear in the domes and the Earth view. • Star names updated to the current IAU list: 495 named stars. • Bayer and Flamsteed designations for stars, and search by designation. • Updated Earth rotation data. • Outer dome: fewer labels, and planet and deep-sky markers no longer show through the ground. FIXES • Local Time now always shows the current time. • Solar System: Grid and Constellations now appear as set the first time you open it. • Moon Calendar values now match Sky Info for the same moment.
