About Portage: Media Server Player
Portage is a player and downloader for your own media server — Plex, Emby or Jellyfin — and for video files in any folder. DOWNLOAD • Save movies and episodes for offline viewing, in original quality or at a size you choose • Downloads continue in the background and resume after interruptions • Your files are visible in the Files app WATCH • Play downloads, or stream straight from the server • Switch audio and subtitle tracks, including the ones embedded in the file • Picture in Picture, resume where you left off, your library searchable in Spotlight • Pinch to zoom the picture to fill the screen CAST • Chromecast and Google TV • DLNA TVs and renderers • Any web browser, even the one in your car — on your network or anywhere, paired with a one-time code • Scan the code the browser shows, or type it • Stay in control from your phone: seek, switch tracks, pause CONVERT • Turn a file your TV can't play into one it can, right on the device • Presets for Apple TV, Chromecast and iPhone pick the right codec and container for you • Conversions checkpoint as they go, so pausing or quitting never loses work Portage connects to servers you already have access to. It hosts no content and has no account of its own. Downloading and streaming need a Plex, Emby or Jellyfin server; local folders play without one.
What’s new
Version 1.0.11 · Updated October 27, 2026
Films your iPhone can't play now play anyway: Portage decodes them itself, or makes a version your Apple TV can play. STRAIGHT TO THE SCREEN • Films in formats your iPhone or iPad can't play, like VP9, AV1 or VC-1, play in full on its screen, in HDR where the film has it • Same player as always: subtitles, sound tracks, picture in picture and the lock screen • The Compatibility Engine badge shows when a film is decoded this way, and how fast DOLBY VISION • Dolby Vision films in MKV files play in Dolby Vision on iPhones and iPads that support it, instead of HDR10 AIRPLAY • Films your Apple TV can't play get a version it can, made as you watch and sized to your Wi-Fi • Switch sound tracks without leaving the TV • While your iPhone makes the picture, the engine's details remind you to keep Portage open COMPATIBILITY ENGINE • Its details show what runs, one line per part, in hardware or software • A film that can't keep up at full speed says so on the badge, with one tap to convert it or stream it converted • Streams in original quality are never switched to your server's conversion on their own STREAMING • When a converted stream won't play here, Auto asks your server for H.264 instead • For 10-bit films, choose HEVC 10-bit or HEVC 8-bit when your server converts FIXES • Streaming, casting, subtitles and downloads work with the newest Jellyfin servers, which refused them • A film without sound no longer shows an empty sound track
