About MomBooks
MomBooks brings real double-entry bookkeeping to iPhone, iPad, and Mac — Plain Text Accounting (PTA), compatible with ledger/hledger/beancount syntax. Every transaction balances to zero, GAAP-oriented reports show where you actually stand, and your data stays on your device unless you choose otherwise. No spreadsheets. No subscription just to see your own numbers. WHO IT'S FOR Generate a starter Chart of Accounts in one tap, tailored to how you actually use money: • Personal Finance — checking, savings, credit cards, and the household categories you'd expect • Rental Property / Landlord — tenant deposits, mortgage interest, depreciation, and rental-specific income & expenses • Small Business — receivables, payables, inventory, owner's equity, and operating expense categories Profiles combine, too — a landlord who also tracks household finances can generate both at once. THE LEDGER CORE • Double-entry register with the Rule of Zero strictly enforced, per commodity • Manual entry via a guided split form or a raw PTA command-line editor with live syntax highlighting • Reusable split templates for recurring transactions — record a paycheck's gross pay, taxes, deductions, and net deposit without re-picking the same accounts every payday • Multi-currency and commodity support, with price directives for exchange rates and lot pricing • Strict Decimal arithmetic throughout — money is never floating-point, anywhere IMPORT, EXPORT, AND RECONCILE • Import plain-text PTA ledgers, OFX/QFX bank statements, and CSV exports, with a reconciliation queue that flags duplicates before anything is committed • Native file picker on every platform — no copy-pasting required • Bulk-reclassify a batch of freshly-imported transactions in one pass, right from the Register • Balance any account against a real bank statement — check off what cleared and watch the difference converge to zero • Export to .ledger or .beancount plain text, with optional two-way file sync • CPA Extract: General Ledger, Trial Balance, Income Statement, and Balance Sheet as CSV or PDF — formats an actual accountant can use REPORTING, BUDGETS, AND FISCAL YEARS • Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Cash Flow, Trial Balance, and a raw Journal view • Configurable fiscal year start — YTD and QTD figures respect it everywhere, not just the calendar year • Zero-based or rollover envelope budgeting against actual spend A REAL AUDIT TRAIL Every create, edit, and delete on a transaction or account is logged: when, a plain-language summary, field-level before/after values, and which device made the change — resolved automatically across your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Export the trail as CSV or PDF for outside review. SECURITY & PRIVACY • Face ID / Touch ID / Optic ID and PIN app lock, with auto-lock and app-switcher privacy masking • Local-first, zero exfiltration — ledger data never leaves the device to third-party analytics • Medical billing entries use de-identified account tokens, keeping PHI out of your ledger text MULTIPLATFORM BY DESIGN Adaptive layout on every screen size, native macOS menu commands and keyboard shortcuts for fast entry, Siri & Shortcuts support, and optional iCloud sync across your own devices. FREE, WITH OPTIONAL PRO The base app is a fully functional ledger — accounts, transactions, splits, the Chart of Accounts generator, plain-text import/export, account reconciliation, the audit trail, and every security feature are free, no account required. Pro adds OFX/QFX statement import, visual CSV mapping, two-way Beancount/HLedger sync, the full report suite (Balance Sheet, P&L, Cash Flow) plus CPA/Auditor CSV & PDF extracts, envelope budgeting, multi-currency tracking, and iCloud sync. MomBooks is a record-keeping tool, not a source of financial, tax, or legal advice. Verify calculations and statements with a licensed CPA or qualified professional. What’s new
Version 2.1.1 · Updated October 23, 2026
MomBooks 2.1.1 is a tune-up with a lot of polish. Your devices now get along like old friends, and every screen got a fresh press. iCloud, Now With Better Manners • When another device deletes entries or a whole book while this one was napping, MomBooks says what went and moves you to a book that's still there. • Edited an entry just as another device deleted it? It shows up as a sync conflict, and Keep Local brings it back. • A reconciliation finished on another device stays put: no false conflict, nothing undone. • If two devices post the same recurring entry before syncing, MomBooks spots the twin and voids the extra in one tap. • Turning iCloud Sync on backs up every book first, and the sync log explains hiccups in plain words (Pro). A Lock That Means It • The privacy lock now covers everything, open forms and alerts included, and your half-typed entry is waiting when you return. • On the Mac it locks when you lock your screen or step away, not every time you switch apps, and unlocks like Passwords with Touch ID or your Mac's password. Lock MomBooks (⌃⌘L) locks at once. • Siri can still jot down purchases while locked; they wait as pending for your review. Spit and Polish • iPad opens on a tab bar with the sidebar a tap away, and keeps your place when you resize a window. • Filled-in form fields keep their names, reports fit an iPhone without hiding amounts, small buttons are easier to tap, large text stops clipping, VoiceOver reads the balance sheet properly, Reduce Motion is respected, and iPhone gives a little tap when you save. • Void straight from the register, and filter it by Uncleared or Voided. • Switch books from Accounts, Reports and Budgets on iPhone. • PDF reports print in landscape with nothing trimmed, and PDF receipts preview on iPhone and iPad. • Open journals and encrypted backups straight from Finder or Files. Numbers, Minded • Each book keeps to itself: pickers, suggestions and new accounts stay in the book you're in, in its currency. • Amounts show at full precision, and budgets and the chart of accounts total each currency on its own. • Give any line a price or lot cost; enter two of quantity, per unit and total, and MomBooks works out the third (Pro). • Bank imports keep their dates across time zones, tricky CSV quotes and debit columns read correctly, and Beancount payees import exactly as written. • Several budgets per book (Pro). • A linked journal file that's emptied by mistake pauses sync instead of voiding your entries (Pro). Same strict double-entry, same zero tracking, just fewer surprises. Happy ledgering!
