About Portugal Speaks

Portugal Speaks is a complete beginner-to-intermediate course for European Portuguese, designed for English speakers, built for expats who need the language to actually live in Portugal. 16 structured lessons take you from your first greeting to traveling and living confidently, with vocabulary flashcards, audio pronunciation, quizzes, and cultural notes along the way. A short placement quiz can drop returning learners straight into the right CEFR level. THREE TIERS. ONE-TIME PAYMENTS. NO SUBSCRIPTION, EVER. No account required, and everything works fully offline after first launch.* FREE - $0 A generous sample that's yours to keep: Lesson 1 in full (with video); Lessons 2–3 in full (audio); all 12 Culture topics; a taste of Phrasebook, Dialogues, Pronunciation, Grammar, and Stories; the Essential verb tier (14 of 50 verbs). ESSENTIAL COURSE - $9.99 one-time The complete course, full audio throughout: all 16 lessons, all 50 verb conjugations across 4 tiers, all 17 dialogues, all 14 stories, the full Phrasebook, Grammar, and Pronunciation guides, the full spaced-repetition review deck, and a personalized certificate of completion. Lessons, Phrasebook, and Pronunciation are recorded on video. Essential plays the native speaker's voice from that same recording, without the video. IMMERSIVE EDITION - $39.99 one-time (or $29.99 to upgrade from Essential) Everything in Essential, plus native-speaker on-camera video for every lesson, the full Phrasebook, and the Pronunciation guide, with video for the sounds that need it. Also unlocks two things found nowhere else: the Listening Hub (five audio-only practice modes) and Conversations (nine guided scenarios, plus optional AI Conversation Practice, powered by generative AI through your own API key). Every recording, every lesson, verb, phrase, and story, is voiced by a real native speaker from Lisbon, not a synthetic or text-to-speech voice. What you practice is what you'll actually hear on the street. WHY EUROPEAN PORTUGUESE? European Portuguese is not the same as Brazilian Portuguese. The sounds, vocabulary and rhythm differ significantly. Every word in Portugal Speaks is taught in the European accent used in Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve and the Silver Coast. WHAT'S INSIDE • 2,500+ native-speaker recordings, every lesson, verb, dialogue, story, and phrase • 483 vocabulary words across 16 lessons, with plain-English phonetic respellings, never IPA • 50 verbs across 4 tiers, every tense and person, all recorded • 17 interactive dialogues (A1-B1): café, hotel, transport, pharmacy, bank, bureaucracy • 14 mini-stories (A1-B2): a classic fable plus original expat-life stories • Pronunciation guide: 8 topics, 70+ sounds with audio examples • Grammar guide: 8 sections, 31 rules • Phrasebook: 84 phrases across 12 categories • 12 Culture topics: fado, saudade, food, café culture, tiles, history, regional accents • Spaced repetition review (SM-2), so vocabulary resurfaces right before you forget it • Speech recognition pronunciation practice - record yourself and get scored (your own API key) • Achievements, streaks, daily XP goals, adjustable text size, and a personalized certificate • Speech Recognition pronunciation practice and AI Conversation Practice are optional features that require your own API key (OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Microsoft Azure) and an internet connection. AI Conversation Practice uses generative AI to produce replies to what you type, generated by the provider whose key you supply. Course content is written and recorded by people; no lesson, phrase, story or recording is AI-generated. All other course content works fully offline.

What’s new

Version 1.0.1 · Updated October 27, 2026

- **Rate app.** Settings has a Rate app button, and the Home screen asks for a rating after your 5th, 10th and 15th completed lesson. Both were switched off by a flag that was never flipped after launch. Windows opens the Store review page and iOS the App Store write-review page. Android stays off until its Play listing exists. - **Each lesson card shows a progress bar of the words and phrases you have marked known.** It sits along the foot of the card and starts empty; nothing is marked learned by opening a card. - **First-time tips explain the word-known check, the practice bookmark and Listen mode, and Settings has a How it works page that shows them again.** One tip per visit to a lesson's vocabulary, each shown once, as a small card at the top of the tab. The card is accented so it reads as a tip rather than another vocabulary card - azulejo blue in Light, gold in Green and Red - after it turned out to be easy to miss on a phone (2026-10-26). Settings > How it works also lists what each part of the app does. - **The section bar reads properly on wide screens.** Each destination now shows its icon above its name instead of beside it, so Pronunciation, Listening-Only and Conversations are spelled out rather than cut to "Pron...". This was visible on Windows at 1280 and narrower, and on every iPad. - **Each lesson card shows the lesson's English name, not a cut-off sentence.** Cards had been printing the opening of the whole description and running out of room mid-word; they now read Greetings, Numbers, Days & Months and so on. The Feriados & Festas card reads Holidays. - **Your Progress spells out each statistic.** "Review Spaced Repetition" was being cut to "Review Spaced...", which named a different thing. - **Onboarding has a Back button.** Screens 2 and 3 of the welcome flow let you undo a wrong motivation pick instead of starting over. - **Settings quick actions wrap into rows on phones** so labels like Placement quiz and Where to next? are no longer cut off. Windows keeps its single row. - **Prices correct themselves after you sign in.** Opening the course paywall before signing in to the App Store could quote US dollars while Apple charged in euros. The price list now reloads when the storefront changes. **
