About Mystery Run: GPS Art
Pick a distance. Follow the directions. Find out what you drew. Mystery Run draws GPS art for you, but the drawing stays a surprise until the end. You choose how far you want to go, and the app finds a route near you that traces a shape on the map: a heart, a cat, a rocket, one of dozens. Every turn is shown visually and with audio. HOW IT WORKS • Choose your mileage, from a quick 3 miles to a long run • Mystery Run fits a drawing to real streets, starting where you stand or anywhere you pin • Put your phone away. A voice calls each turn by street name, with a heads-up before it comes • Glance at the map if you need it: the next quarter mile ahead of you, on a map you can zoom, turn with you or switch to satellite • Finish the route and the drawing is revealed MADE FOR THE RUN, NOT THE SCREEN Turn-by-turn voice guidance keeps working with the screen locked and your music playing. Cues duck your audio, say the turn, and get out of the way. Miss a turn and the app tells you how to get back on the line. KEEP WHAT YOU DREW Every finished run is saved on your phone with its drawing, distance and pace. Share a card of your art to Instagram, your group chat, or anywhere else. Record in your usual running app at the same time if you want the miles there too. WORKS WHERE YOU RUN 49 major cities are mapped ahead of time, from New York to Tokyo. Anywhere else, Mystery Run maps your streets the first time you ask, in under a minute. FREE Every drawing is free right now, animals included. No subscription. PRIVATE BY DESIGN No account. No login. No ads in the app. Routes are computed on your device. Each run's route and GPS track are saved on our server to improve the drawings, never sold or shown to anyone, and one switch in Settings turns that off and deletes them. Usage analytics help decide what to build next, a count of installs and purchases tells us whether our ads work, and a second switch turns those off. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors. What’s new
Version 1.2 · Updated October 19, 2026
Sharper drawings. Mystery Run now tries tens of thousands of placements for every shape on your streets and keeps only the ones that read clearly, so routes follow the outline and stop crossing themselves. • A run map you can pinch and drag, and it turns with you as you run. Tap the compass for north up. • Switch the run map between Night, Standard and Satellite. • Turn calls come right at the corner, distances follow the route, and footpaths are called paths. • Export the route as a GPX file to follow it on a watch. It shows you the drawing, so it's up to you. • A new loading screen shows each step while your route is drawn. • The shortest run is now 3 miles. Two miles was too short to draw clearly. • Fixed: walking home partway through no longer marks a run as finished. • Runs now help make the drawings better: each run's route and GPS track are saved on our server so we can see how drawings come out on real streets. It's on by default, and Settings, Data, Share runs turns it off and deletes the runs already sent.
