About Gaijin: Japanese Dictionary
Find the word behind the Japanese form you actually encountered—and remember it in context. Gaijin combines an offline Japanese-English dictionary, a private reading assistant, and focused study tools in one continuous workflow. Search the form you saw—or paste, type, import, or photograph Japanese text—then save useful vocabulary with the original sentence and review it later. LOOK UP WHAT YOU ACTUALLY SAW • Search in Japanese, English, kana, or romaji. • Find dictionary forms from conjugated Japanese. • Explore readings, meanings, examples, related words, kanji, components, and stroke order. • Listen to words and examples with system speech. READ WITHOUT LOSING YOUR PLACE • Add Japanese text and read it with furigana. • Tap a word for a quick definition without leaving the text. • Keep the original sentence, encountered form, and reading position. • Create an automatic study deck that stays connected to its source. STUDY WITH CONTEXT • Review due vocabulary with spaced repetition and clear interval choices. • Use Practice for objective recall without changing the review schedule. • Mark words as Learning, Known, or Ignored. • Build an optional deck from words you look up repeatedly. • Trace and recall kanji from the vocabulary you are learning. LEARN JAPANESE GRAMMAR • Browse source-linked grammar references from JLPT N5 through N1. • Study formation, nuance, and source-linked examples. • Check understanding with focused practice. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • No account, advertising, or cross-app tracking. • Camera recognition and Reader text stay on your device. • Dictionary and study content are available offline. Gaijin is built for learners who want to move from “What does this mean?” to “I’ll remember it” without copying words between apps. What’s new
Version 2.2.1 · Updated September 9, 2026
Saving words is now simpler and more personal. • Save dictionary and reading words directly to Favorites. • Add a word to a new or existing personal list in one step. • Find Favorites, History, and My lists at the top of Library. • Keep JLPT study packs separate from personal save destinations. • Preserve sentence context when creating a list from a reading. This update also prevents study packs from filling Favorites or restoring removed favorites when the app opens, and improves saving at larger text sizes.
