About Cognate: Vocabulary Builder

Most vocabulary apps ask you to trust a streak. Cognate asks a harder question and then answers it: how many words do you actually know? Sixteen yes-or-no questions place you on a frequency list. From that day on the app keeps one number, the words you retain: the words it expects you to remember right now, with at least 90% probability, calculated from your own review history. Nothing else is dressed up as progress. MEASURED, NOT PROMISED The number starts at zero on your first day and it can go down. A word counts only after it has come back days later and stuck. That is the whole point: a count you can trust is worth more than a streak you can protect. 49 LANGUAGES, OFFLINE Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Ukrainian, Russian, Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian, Slovenian, Macedonian, Romanian, Catalan, Galician, Basque, Latin, Ancient Greek, Greek, Albanian, Turkish, Persian, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Malay, Tagalog, Hungarian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Welsh, Armenian, Georgian, Afrikaans and Esperanto. Each dictionary downloads once, then works with no connection: entries, senses, example sentences with translations, inflected forms and pronunciation. Free keeps one language in study. FIVE WAYS TO BE ASKED Recognition, listening, production, cloze and inflection. The scheduler is FSRS-6, and it opens a new card type for a word only once that word has earned it. ON THE LOCK SCREEN, ON THE WRIST A Lock Screen widget with the word of the moment and today's count. A Home Screen widget that shows the word first and the meaning on Reveal, with both grades right there. An Apple Watch app for one-handed review. Siri and Shortcuts. WORDS YOU CANNOT KEEP After too many misses in a row, a word leaves the study queue instead of eating every session. It stays in the dictionary and you can put it back whenever you want. PRIVACY No account, no sign-up, no password. Your words and answers stay on your phone, and in your own iCloud if you are signed in. FREE AND PRO Free: one language, 50 words in study, the widgets, the whole dictionary and search. Pro: every language, no cap on words. Monthly, yearly or once. SOURCES Dictionary data from Wiktionary and JMdict. Example sentences from Tatoeba and public-domain corpora. Pronunciation from Lingua Libre and Wikimedia Commons. Every example sentence and recording names its own source and licence, and the full list is in Settings. SUBSCRIPTION AND TERMS Cognate Pro is available monthly, yearly with a two-week free trial for new subscribers, or as a one-time Lifetime purchase. Prices appear in the app before you buy. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation. A subscription renews automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends, and you can manage or cancel it in Settings, Apple Account, Subscriptions.
