About SkyLumi: Night Sky Star Map
What is that bright light beside the Moon? Point your iPhone at it and find out. SkyLumi is a photographic star map and stargazing guide. Identify stars, planets and constellations above you, then zoom into galaxies and nebulae through astronomical survey imagery. No astronomy experience or telescope needed. POINT UP AND EXPLORE Tap Aim to follow the sky as you move your iPhone. Use AR to overlay the map on your camera view, or explore by dragging and zooming. Search for an object by name and jump to its position. Discover all 88 constellations, the Moon with its current phase, planets, star clusters, galaxies and nebulae. Track the calculated positions of the International Space Station and Starlink satellites using orbital data. Visibility outside depends on darkness, weather and your horizon. PLAN A NIGHT UNDER THE STARS Open the Star Guide for a short list of objects worth looking for after dark tonight from your location, with plain-language stories about what you will see. A PHOTOGRAPHIC UNIVERSE Follow the Milky Way, explore the Andromeda Galaxy, or look inside the Orion Nebula. SkyLumi brings together survey imagery including the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS2) and Pan-STARRS, with credits to the observatories and teams behind it. The photographic view reveals details and colors beyond what your eyes can see unaided. Some deep-sky photographs are blended into the survey using AI-assisted image processing; source photographs and processing are credited in the app. Prefer a different view? Switch to the clean catalog map or the painterly Sky Field mode. TAKE IT OUTSIDE • Night Vision: a deep-red display to help preserve your dark adaptation. • Horizon view: orient the map to your location. • City stargazing: start with the Moon, bright planets and familiar stars. • Offline core: bundled stars, constellations, planets and catalog views remain available without a connection. Detailed survey imagery and fresh satellite data need internet access. Camera access is used for AR. Location helps align the map to where you are. You can browse the sky without using the camera. EVERYTHING INCLUDED No ads, account, subscription or premium tier. Every feature described here is included. Use SkyLumi for a quick look from the porch, a night at a campsite, or a closer look at a distant galaxy from home.
What’s new
Version 2.0.0 · Updated October 23, 2026
Moving from one object to the next no longer zooms out when both fit on the screen. Picking or leaving a planet no longer makes the sky flash dark and then bright. At deep zoom, Skylumi loads coarser sky photos while you drag, pinch or fling, and the sharp ones once you stop. Close-up photos of nebulae and galaxies now fade in when the view comes to rest instead of while it moves. Skylumi's photo caches no longer keep growing when it stays open for hours, and it does less work in the background. When you come back to it, the sky clock catches up to the current time. In search, "Visible now" stays empty until the sky is dark. If you have not set your location, it asks for it instead of guessing. Satellites are hidden when the sky clock is more than five days from their orbit data, and the app tells you why. The zoom scale reads 1x when fully zoomed out. Faint stars are drawn at the right size on high-resolution screens. The app name is now spelled Skylumi, on the launch screen too.
