About Aloud AAC

Aloud is a talking aid for adults who lost their speech — after a stroke, with ALS or Parkinson's, or after head and neck cancer. It is not a children's symbol board. It is built for a person who still has their own thoughts and their own vocabulary, and needs to be understood at a doctor's desk, at a pharmacy counter, or across a kitchen table. HOW IT WORKS Tap a few word tiles — "help pain", "water cold", "call daughter" — then tap "Make a sentence". The phone proposes up to three complete sentences, built on the device by Apple's on-device models. You tap the one you meant, and only then is it spoken. Nothing is ever spoken automatically. The app proposes; you decide. If none of the sentences is right, "Say my words" is always there: it speaks the exact words you tapped, word for word, with no AI involved. And whenever the phone is speaking, a single full-width Stop control is on screen — reachable by touch, by keyboard, and through VoiceOver, Switch Control and Assistive Access. Every proposed sentence also passes through a set of on-device checks before you see it, written to catch changed meanings — for example, a dropped "not". The final safeguard is structural: the app never speaks a sentence you did not explicitly choose. PRIVATE BY ARCHITECTURE - No network. The app's code makes no network requests. It works fully in airplane mode. - No account, no sign-in, no email address. - No analytics, no tracking, no third-party code. - Your words, phrases and profile stay on your iPhone or iPad. BUILT FOR REAL HANDS AND REAL DAYS - Large, fixed word tiles with picture symbols and color-coded word groups — both optional, so the board can be as visual or as text-forward as you like. - Nothing moves, reorders itself, or times out. - Dynamic Type up to the largest accessibility sizes, with nothing truncated. - High-contrast design that holds up under Increase Contrast. - Works with VoiceOver, Switch Control and Assistive Access. - Speaks in any installed system voice, including your Apple Personal Voice. WITHOUT AI, IT STILL WORKS The three generated sentences need Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro and later). On other supported iPhones, a built-in rule-based expander offers sentence options instead, and everything else works the same. Speaking is never metered and is never switched off. FREE, WITH NOTHING HELD BACK Aloud is free. Every feature is included. There is no subscription, no account, and no cap on speaking — a person's voice is not something to meter. FOR FAMILIES AND CLINICIANS An optional usage log — off by default, always visible when on — supports a communication trial, with a report you export yourself from the share sheet. Nothing is transmitted anywhere. Aloud is a communication aid, not a medical device. It does not diagnose or treat any condition.

What’s new

Version 1.3 · Updated October 4, 2026

Right now, on the home screen. A new shortcut under your words opens the phrases for this time of day: morning, afternoon or night. It opens the list and speaks nothing until you choose. Your people, by name. Add the people in your life in About me and each one gets ten ready sentences: Please call Sarah. I miss Sarah. When is Sarah coming? Tell Sarah I said hello. They appear on the person's tile and in the People pack. Bring your words. Moving from another app? In Settings, Back up and move, choose Add words from a list. Paste a list or pick a text file, see exactly what will be added before anything changes, then add it with one tap. Adding never removes or moves a word you already have. My card helps the people helping you. The first page now also says: Please do not finish my sentences. Your printed board shows the same three lines on page one, under How to talk with me. Word beside the board, on iPad. Turn it on in Pictures and color, and a word you tap in My words opens its sentences beside the board instead of on top of it. It is off unless you choose it, and on iPhone nothing changes. Nothing leaves your device. No account, no network, no tracking.
