About Calorie Burndown
Calorie Burndown answers one question the Health app doesn't: given what you've eaten and burned today, how much room do you have left? It reads those numbers straight from HealthKit, does the arithmetic against a goal you set, and shows the answer on your phone, your Lock Screen, and your wrist. WHAT YOU'LL NEED Calorie Burndown doesn't log food and doesn't estimate your metabolism — it reads what's already in Health. So you'll want a calorie-tracking app writing what you eat to Health, and an Apple Watch recording what you burn. If you already track both, this turns them into a number neither one gives you. If you don't, this app has nothing to read and won't be much use. EVERY FEATURE IS FREE No paywall, no subscription, nothing locked. The in-app purchases are optional tips — they unlock nothing, and the app behaves identically whether or not you ever use them. WORKS EVERYWHERE YOU DO - iPhone app with an iPad-optimized layout - A home screen widget that shows your remaining budget at a glance - Lock Screen widgets, so it's there without unlocking - A watchOS companion app with real-time numbers, even without your phone nearby - Watch face complications and Smart Stack widgets BUILT ON HEALTHKIT, NOT A SEPARATE DATABASE There's no food database here, no barcode scanner, and no second place to log things. Keep using whatever app you already use; Calorie Burndown reflects it automatically. Your health data is read on your device and never leaves it — there is no account, no server, and nothing to sign up for. YOUR WATCH WORKS ON ITS OWN The Watch app queries HealthKit directly, independent of your phone, so you get a real-time deficit number on a run or at the gym even if you left your phone at home. Settings and progress stay in sync across devices whenever they're near each other. WEEKLY CHECK-IN AND TRENDS A simple weekly check-in helps you see the bigger trend, not just today's number, and History charts your weight against the pace your target implies. IF YOU WANT TO SAY THANKS Settings has a tip jar with three sizes. That is the only place money is ever mentioned. It grants no features, removes no limits, and nothing in the app changes if you skip it. Calorie Burndown does not diagnose, treat, or provide medical advice — it's a simple deficit calculator built on data you're already tracking in Health.
What’s new
Version 1.6.1 · Updated September 25, 2026
Fixes from the first days of 1.6. Resting energy was going missing. The app reads your Health data hour by hour, and resting energy arrives in long stretches that cross from one hour into the next — those were being discarded rather than counted, so it could read your resting burn as zero. Depending on where it landed, that showed up as History crediting only what you had actively burned, as days marked missed that you had actually hit, or as the Today screen refusing to show anything at all and telling you it could not read your Health data. It could read it the whole time. Thank you to the tester who kept reporting this until it made sense. The chart on your Watch complication kept disappearing between visits. The app refreshes those figures in the background every fifteen minutes or so, and the shape beside them was being started and then abandoned each time, so unless you had just opened the app there was nothing to draw. It now finishes the job. Opening the app is quicker. It was reading your Health data up to seven times at once on launch, each read slowing the others down, and the "Reading your Health data" screen stayed up for all of it. Now it reads once. Also in this update: - If you have entered your resting energy manually in Settings, History now uses it. Every other screen already did, so your days were being scored against a figure the rest of the app had agreed to use. - Each check-in time in Settings says when it will next arrive. Changing one to a time that has already passed schedules it for tomorrow, and the weekly review moves within its own day — both correct, neither obvious, and now both visible. - The Watch app no longer briefly shows an empty space where the chart belongs while it waits for your resting energy to load. Every feature is still free. No paywall, no subscription, no account.
