Every scan is stored as a one-way hash of the subject, an age bracket, and a result. You get an auditable record that a check happened, without holding a database of your patrons' personal data. One verdict fills the screen, one-handed, in low light. VALID, UNDER 21, EXPIRED, CHECK, and PASSBACK each carry a word, a color, and a distinct shape at the same time, so no verdict ever depends on color alone.
