About Ink — Handwritten Notes
Ink is a notebook for iPad and Apple Pencil that stays out of your way. Write on paper that holds still, drop in PDFs, documents and photos, record a lecture and watch your ink replay with the audio. Everything you write is searchable, exportable in open formats, and kept on your iPad. WRITE LIKE ON PAPER Open the app and write. No account, no setup, no dialogs. Four muted fountain-pen inks, pressure that behaves, paper that stays out of your way. Scratch out a word the way you would on paper — it disappears. Works with Apple Pencil and with your finger. EVERY PAGE REMEMBERS Every stroke you write is kept in every page's history, forever, free. Slide back through time and watch a page un-write itself; restore any moment. Other apps sell version history in 7-day and 90-day tiers. Ink's is unlimited, because your safety net should not be a product. FIND YOUR OWN HANDWRITING Search reads your handwriting on this iPad — nothing is uploaded, ever. LECTURES, LINKED TO YOUR INK Record audio while you take notes. Ink remembers which strokes you wrote while each thing was said, with on-device transcripts. Recording length is never metered. STUDY WHAT YOU WROTE Turn any page into flashcards with real spaced repetition, built in, free, no credit meter. Write [[double-bracket links]] in ink to connect notebooks; Ink finds the connections back. PDFs, TREATED WITH RESPECT Import a PDF and write on it. Your ink lives on its own layer — the document beneath is never touched. Export as a searchable PDF (your handwriting becomes findable text) or as Markdown. NOTHING LEAVES THIS iPAD No account. No ads. No analytics. No cloud. Handwriting recognition and audio transcription run on this device. The privacy policy is one page because there is nothing to disclose. EARLY ACCESS, SAID PLAINLY Ink is free and fully unlocked today. When the store arrives, your first notebook stays free forever — complete, with history, search, recording and export — and everything beyond it will be one unlock: $5.99 a month or $29.99 a year. The full price sheet is inside the app and at inkremembers.com/pricing, published before your first page, because every note app you've been burned by changed the deal by surprise. Ink's deal predates you. And the price will only ever count forward: notebooks you make before it arrives stay fully yours, and if you ever pay and stop, you keep everything already delivered — sync pauses, nothing locks. Drag one notebook onto another to file them into stacks. Ink is made for iPad and Apple Pencil, and runs on iPad only.
What’s new
Version 1.2 · Updated October 15, 2026
Ink 1.2 adds four things to every notebook: each page knows when it was written, tape to cover words, section tabs, and a proof that your notes are safe. Written On Every page remembers the day and hour it was written. Hold the page counter to see it. The page overview groups pages under day headers and shows the span of each sitting. Hold a finger on a word and a small caption in the ink's own colour tells you when it was written, with a play button when a recording covers it. Pages from before this version say "Before Ink kept time". Tape Pick Tape in the highlighter's popover and lay a paper-coloured strip over anything you want to learn. Tap a strip with a fingertip to lift it. Tape comes in three widths, hides the line it lies on, and behaves like any other stroke for undo and Time Travel. A page with tape on it becomes a Study card: Study lifts the strips one by one, and you grade once. Section tabs Choose Add Tab in the page overview and a small stub appears on the page's fore edge. Tap a stub to jump to that section. Tabs become chapters in exported PDFs and travel with the Ink Archive. Writing • Guided paper, a new paper whose lines appear under the pen as it touches the page and fade after it lifts. • Lift the Ink: hold a finger on empty paper and the ink fades so you can see the document beneath. It stays lifted while your finger rests. The export sheet offers Include my ink. • Write #word and it is a tag, listed beside links and exact in search. • Favourite pen presets: long-press to save colour-and-width slots in each pen's popover. Marker opacity comes in Light, Medium and Strong. • A notebook remembers which pen you used in it. • Following a [[link]] stays in place instead of reopening the editor. • Use any page as the notebook's cover. • A left-handed layout, in the toolbar's Customize popover. Finding and reading • When a search finds nothing, Ink shows up to three crops of handwriting that look close. Tap one to teach the page that word. • Page as Text: the page's words beside the page. Fix a misread line, then share the text. Recording • Record a Lecture in the New menu makes a dated notebook that starts recording on its first page. • Every page turn during a recording is a chapter. Each page has a Chapters list in the Recordings panel, and the transcript is grouped by page. • Recording cards take their title from the first phrase and show the pages they cover. Trim a recording by dragging the ends of its timeline; the file is never cut, so Undo is free. Playback controls appear on the lock screen. Study • Shuffle, Search, 20 at a time and Swap sides in the Study menu. Export cards as CSV for Anki. Shelf and overview • Choose Select in the shelf's sort menu to act on several notebooks at once. Long-press a page in the overview to select several, then Export, Move, Duplicate or Delete. • Quick Notes take their title from their first line. Trash rows show the days left and offer Delete Now. Keeping safe • Tap the Saved pill to see the proof: counters, the last backup and the last check, and what a clear or delete kept. • Once a week while charging, Ink can restore its newest backup into a separate copy and compare every stroke, so you know the backup can be restored. Turn it on in Settings › Storage, or choose Verify now. Accessibility and polish • Text size changes apply at once, without a relaunch. Bold Text and Increase Contrast are honoured. • Buttons look and behave the same everywhere, and every one is easy to hit. • The Early Access screen is shorter: three rows and Continue. • Settings says each fact once, and the support mail pre-fills your build number. • The New Notebook sheet fits the iPad mini in landscape, and the Couldn't save toast keeps its words together in a narrow window.
