About Mamou: Baby Names for Couples

You cannot agree on a name. You like one, they like the other, and nothing on the list is the one. Mamou is for that. Two people, two phones, one name at the end. Naming your baby should be one of the best parts of pregnancy, not the argument you keep having. Mamou is built to be light. You play it together, a few rounds at a time, and it ends with a name you both actually love. HOW IT WORKS You each swipe your own deck, on your own phone, without seeing what the other one is doing. That part matters. Nobody's honest reaction gets bent by a face across the table. Mamou learns as you go. Not filters you set once and forget: it reads every love, maybe and pass, and the deck gets better inside a single sitting. Then it quietly starts steering both of your decks toward the middle ground, until the names coming up are the ones with a real chance of working for both of you. And the deck does not pad itself out. Kaitlyn, Caitlin and Katelynn are one card to judge, not three swipes spent on the same name. Every card is a different name. When you both like the same name, it matches. That is the moment the whole app is built around. WHEN THE MATCHES PILE UP At fifty matches you have a new problem: a long list of names you both like, and no way to choose between them. Final Picks is the part that gets you to one. Three quiet solo passes first, each one a test you would do anyway: Sound. Say it out loud. Yell it up the stairs. What would you actually call them day to day? Look. See it on a birth certificate, a school nametag, a phone contact, a signature. Story. Read where the name really comes from, and decide, silently, whether it moves you. You judge every name against your own bar, never against another name you love. Nothing dies on a coin flip. A name only goes out when you have both cut it on the same test. Between rounds you see the score, never who voted what. Then the Pitch, played together on your two phones. You take turns reading a name's story aloud and making the case for it. You both vote in private, and the phones reveal at the same moment. Then the Last Table. You each secretly pick your number one. Same name, and it is done. Different names, and both of them are the final pair, and the only thing left to settle is which one goes first. You finish with a first name and a middle name. REAL NAMES, NOT INVENTED ONES No name in Mamou was invented for it. They come from open national birth and population registries across Europe, North America and Oceania, plus open reference data for the older names: the US Social Security Administration, France's INSEE, the Office for National Statistics, and more. Nothing is generated. So the rarity dial is real, from household names all the way down to deep cuts that came out of a register rather than out of a machine. Meanings and stories are sourced and cited. If we cannot cite it, we do not show it. THINGS THAT SHOULD BE STANDARD Every name shows the other spellings in its family, so the one you write on a certificate is the one you meant. Pronunciation in your family's languages, so you can see whether a name reads on sight before you test it on a stranger. Undo is free, and it steps back one swipe at a time through your last fifty. So are your filters, and so is every one of your matches. And Mamou is free for both of you, not free for one of you and paid for the other. Filters that stay set. No names starting with R, must contain, must not contain, length, syllables. Add an older child's name and the deck leans toward names that sit well beside it. Mamou does not track you and shows no ads. Your partner sees your matches, never your swipes. Find your name, together.
