About Boardlore: World Chess & Go
Every great board-game tradition of the world, in one beautiful app. Boardlore brings together twenty of the world's chess and board-game traditions under one elegant design — from Western chess to Shogi, Xiangqi, Go, and the historic games that shaped them all. Learn a new tradition, master an old favorite, and play a strong AI opponent anywhere, even offline. WORLDS OF STRATEGY, ONE APP - Western chess, plus rule-variants: Chess960, Crazyhouse, Antichess, Horde, Atomic, Racing Kings, Three-check, and King of the Hill - Shogi and Minishogi (Japanese chess) - Xiangqi (Chinese chess) - Go, Atari-Go, and multiple board sizes - Janggi (Korean chess), Makruk (Thai chess), Sittuyin (Burmese chess), Shatranj (the medieval Arabic root of chess), and Dobutsu (animal shogi) Twenty playable variants across five living traditions and their historic roots. PLAY ANYWHERE, EVEN OFFLINE An on-device AI opponent with multiple strength levels plays fully offline — on a plane, on the train, or anywhere without a signal. LEARN THE RULES Never played Shogi or Go? A built-in "learn the rules" onboarding teaches every unfamiliar variant, step by step, so nothing is ever off-limits. HERITAGE REPLAY Explore a curated corpus of historic games across traditions, and see how the masters played. TRAIN Sharpen your game with puzzle practice tailored to each tradition. BEAUTIFUL REGIONAL ART Each tradition is rendered in its own visual heritage — a beautifully bound anthology of the world's strategy games, not a generic chess board. Available on iPhone and iPad. HONEST AND PLAYER-FIRST The core game is free to play. A brief full-screen ad appears between games — roughly every other match, and never during play, so your concentration stays unbroken. Need more hints or undo? A free daily allowance refills twice a day, or watch an optional rewarded ad for an instant top-up. Prefer no ads at all? A Pro upgrade removes them entirely and unlocks unlimited hints, undo, and every regional art set — as an annual subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase. No pay-to-win, and never a mid-game interruption. Boardlore — the world's board-game traditions, beautifully together.
What’s new
Version 1.0.2 · Updated October 15, 2026
Two months of work: new ways to play and study, and a long list of fixes. - Two people can now play each other on one device: pick Two players on the Play tab, in any tradition - Set up any position in any tradition, then play it or study it - Paste in a game record to replay and review it; imported games are kept in your library and marked Imported - A Shogi game now exports as KIF and a Xiangqi game as WXF, the formats those traditions use, and Janggi shows its moves in Janggi notation - Calculation mode: the first moves are listed instead of played, so you picture the position and find the rest of the line - Learn has a new tactics layer: named tactical ideas you can play through, across most traditions - Every "Meet the pieces" row now shows how that piece moves, with its squares marked on a board - A timed Go game now uses a Go clock: byo-yomi with a period meter you can read at a glance, and Canadian overtime - Finishing a Go game and opening Review now shows your territory instead of "coming soon", the dead-stone reading is much more accurate, and every Go board draws the star points a real goban has - The review names the opening you played, stops counting book moves as your mistakes, offers to drill that opening, says which phase of the game your mistakes came in, and tells you which piece to move and where instead of notation you may never have seen - The Bot Ladder can be climbed in seventeen traditions instead of thirteen, and it now starts in the tradition you were playing instead of sending you to Western chess - A new setting puts Latin letters on Xiangqi and Janggi pieces, on the board and in the lessons, so you can identify every piece without reading Chinese or Korean characters - An Atomic capture now reads as an explosion, with its own sound, and a game-ending blast plays out before the result arrives. A piece destroyed by an explosion stays gone; it no longer flickers back into view on your next move - Seven traditions that offered no puzzles at all now have them, and the puzzle list tells two easy mates apart instead of treating them as one difficulty - A master volume slider, so you can turn the app down without muting it - A true-black appearance that saves power on OLED screens and is easier on the eyes in a dark room - A move played after your clock ran out now loses on time, and the board-less clock no longer sleeps mid-game or flags you for taking a phone call - Several ways a saved game could be lost, damaged, or silently replaced are closed - Screen readers now read move history as sentences in Xiangqi, Shogi, Minishogi, Janggi and Dobutsu; every solving surface can read you the whole board; buttons meet a comfortable tap size; and the app holds up at 200% text - The app downloads about 16 MB lighter - Wording and grammar fixes in every language the app ships in, including three traditions that named their pieces half in English on German and Japanese phones Thank you for playing. We would love your feedback.
