About Learning English Idioms
Idioms can be hard to understand, even after you learn what they mean. You can learn that a sitting duck means a person with no protection against attack, and still wonder: what do ducks have to do with it? When an idiom seems to make no sense, it is hard to remember. Pictures can help learners remember the meaning of new words, but idioms, with their many parts and the metaphors inside them, need pictures that are crafted with special care. Research shows that pictures work in both directions: the right picture keeps the meaning in memory, and the wrong picture can keep a mistake there instead. Every illustration in this app is designed to carry both parts of the idiom at once: the literal words you can see, and the figurative meaning behind them. When you remember the picture, you have a pathway back to both the words and what they mean. The app also explains, in plain language, why each idiom means what it means. This explanation is what makes the app stand out: an idiom that makes sense is far easier to remember than an idiom you have only memorized. HOW YOU LEARN You meet each idiom in a real conversation first, so you can see how people actually use it. Then you study the idiom itself: the picture, short questions that guide you into it, the explanation, and example sentences from real usage. You practice rebuilding the sentences word by word. Later, spaced review brings each idiom back for a little more practice, again and again over time. Practice repeated at the right times is how new language settles into long-term memory. WHAT’S INSIDE - 107 idioms in 18 themed chapters - An original illustration for every idiom - A conversation for every chapter, where the idioms appear in real use - “Making metaphorical sense”: a plain explanation of why each idiom means what it means - “Digging deeper”: where an idiom comes from, related idioms, or notes on natural usage - Example sentences adapted for learners from real-world usage - Tap any idiom to hear it read aloud - Practice activities that rebuild real sentences and test understanding - Spaced review with four modes: recognize the picture, match the meaning, choose the idiom that fits, and put the sentence in order - Search and bookmarks, so you can find and save your favorites The first three chapters are free forever. A single purchase gives permanent access to all 107 idioms. No subscription, no account, no ads. WHY LEARN IDIOMS Idioms are the spice of a language. They carry culture inside them, and they bring people closer, because an idiom says: we share this. English speakers reach for idioms at the moments that matter in a conversation. They also love to play with idioms, changing the words to make a joke or just to be clever. Using them well is one of the clearest signs of an accomplished learner of English. And they are simply fun. WHO IT’S FOR Upper-intermediate and advanced learners of English, and the teachers who work with them. If you love language for its own sake, its culture, its humor, its play, this app was made for you. BUILT ON PUBLISHED RESEARCH The method is based on peer-reviewed research on how pictures help second-language learners understand and remember idioms. The app was created by Kris Ramonda, an applied linguist and English-language educator at Kansai University in Japan, whose doctoral research examined exactly this question. The illustrations are by Nerijus Civilis, who also drew the pictures for the original study.
