ABOUT THE EU DRONE REGULATION Since 2021, Regulation 2019/947 applies across the EU. Anyone flying a drone of 250 g or more needs a certificate of competency – the "EU drone licence". It is valid for 5 years in all 27 EU member states plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Switzerland applies the EU drone rules; exams there are run by FOCA (BAZL). A1/A3: the basic certificate. Fly smaller drones (class C1, up to 900 g) close to people, or heavier drones up to 25 kg well away from people. A2: the add-on certificate for class C2 drones (up to 4 kg) flown closer to people.
